Yeah, the problem with hosting is that I've been pigging out for days!  I'll be having another piece of pumpkin pie here in a few minutes!  :D

Ken, now you need to find something cool to power with it!  The fan and generator are both neat, I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Re: Turkey day

I'm a bit late, but hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving!

Man, I'm bad.  I've had a few things I could have posted, but I've been lazy.  I'll try to get to it now that the weather is taking a turn.

Re: HF Parts Washer

dag, you have it the wrong way round... The water based cleaners (like Steve and you are using) are hard on paint and steel.  I'm using the real mineral oil based parts cleaner stuff (very similar to kerosene), but the parts washer specific fluid is higher flash point.  The higher flash point reduce...

Re: HF Parts Washer

Hi Steve.  I used real solvent from day one, so mine looks brand new, minty fresh.  Same solvent since the beginning of this thread, no noticeable evaporation.  I've done zero maintenance.  It sits there ready to use, always plugged in and ready to go.  One of the best tool additions I've every made.

Ken, very cool, thanks for sharing.

So, it appears the whole tank/base is cast iron, or is that aluminum?  Anyway, very cool, keep the thread going and show us the final result.  Running, of course!  Even cooler if you have some implement to run with it.

Re: 782

D2, I really believe you're overthinking this, creating a solution for a problem that doesn't exist.  When I've used my 1872 hard, I've never detected any issues of overheating due to the side covers installed.   The Kohler fan blows the cooling air through the engine tins from the driveshaft area w...

Re: 2084 SGT

Gary, that is a "pushrod", not a connecting rod.  A connecting rod is what "connects" the piston to the crank.  When a connecting rod is involved, it generally breaks and it is catastrophic, generally destroys the block, hence Big Mike's questioning that as a failure. So, stuck v...

Re: 2084 SGT

Gary - Great news, glad it's been saved with minimal cost! I'd recommend using this "scare" to encourage better maintenance going forward. Regularly check the oil and top off as needed. Regular oil changes at factory recommended intervals (I think it's every 50 hours if I remember correctl...

Re: Series I or II?

Beautiful!  Congratulations!  The repaint appears to have been done very nicely. Also, just my opinion, I wouldn't consider replacing that engine with a Command.  Even if it was a Series I, there's no reason to replace an engine that's running great.  If it's a Series II, I'd be especially content w...

Re: 782

If you removed the tin from the engine itself, that would destroy the engine as that tin directs the airflow around the cylinders.  But just removing the side covers of the tractor will not hurt anything except the appearance, and it will make the tractor louder.  Myself, I wouldn't remove them as I...

Rick, nice that you found another candidate to look at.  Let yourself enjoy the hunt (as you have been), that's part of the fun! Sloppy steering can likely be improved some by adjusting the lash in the steering box, a very simple procedure.  At its worst, it would be a case of replacing a worn steer...

Nope!  Eight years later, no noticeable evaporation.  Always plugged in and filled, always ready to use for even the smallest job.  I've yet to even think about topping it off.  Meanwhile dag never gets to use his without making a big deal out of it!  You only live once, fill that thing and have it ...

Re: Engine Backfire

Ok, that's good information.  So, "backfire" to me is technically when it spits back through the carb, I tend to call what you're describing "afterfire".  Just to clarify the two types of typical "backfire" issues. This could be a sticky valve, or worse a valve that has...

Re: Engine Backfire

Hi Woody, nice to have a long-time member make their first post! If I'm understanding your post correctly, everything was fine after the carb rebuild and it ran fine, but now is doing the same as it was before the rebuild. Backfiring can be a symptom of a lean mixture (as you discovered originally)....

I agree. How many push mowers are crushed at the scrapper because of a clogged bottom carburetor jet hole? All because some idiots thought that putting ethanol in our gas was going to make the world cleaner.  In reality it has caused way more energy use to replace the equipment it has ruined.  I dr...

Richard, good to see you back.  dag must have his meds dialed in, because I think he nailed this one and stuck the landing!  Lol Expanding on dag's explanation, the difference in the oil system I remember is that the Series I relied on splash lubrication and on hills/slopes it didn't always lubricat...

Kevin, that's great news!  Don't feel bad, missing the coil initially.  The point is that you stuck with it and got it sorted.  Think about all the good machinery that's gone to the dump due to something simple.  Kudos for conquering it!

Re: 782 engine blowby

Ok, obviously my ignorance is showing concerning Kohler compression numbers.  My experience is with engines with higher numbers, so excuse my misstep there.  That is why I mentioned checking the manual, I knew I was swinging a bit wild there! A bad condenser can absolutely wreak havoc.  Bad coil as ...

Re: 782 engine blowby

Kevin - Sorry for your troubles.  95 psi sounds very low to me, too low for ignition.  Check the Kohler manual, but I'd expect at least around 150 psi as normal.   Low compression... If the the valve seats wear enough the valves will be held off of their seats just a tiny amount and you'll lose a to...

D2, very good.  Also make sure it is the right condenser, either by part number or microfarad rating.  The wrong one is as bad as a bad one.

A bad condenser can make it run real bad.  Condensers can be tricky to check as well, just replace it for good measure, to be sure.
