Re: 129 =Time for a new Engine

I recently saw a Cub Cadet 1810; I didn't get to investigate it, as a kid was all over the place on it, never still for a minute. Had the thought occurred to me at the time, I would have flagged him down and checked under the hood. After doing a bit of research, I see that it has a Kohler M18 - 18hp...

Re: 129 =Time for a new Engine

That is sort of how I was thinking = $100 here and $200 there and pretty soon I will have overshot that $800 deal. I have a guy just up the road who builds competition Kohlers for pulling; he is pretty well versed in everything and knows where to take them to get the machine work done. I am going to...

Re: 129 =Time for a new Engine

The flywheel does not appear to come with the engine in your link. Of corse the shroud needs to be changed with the flywheel. The flywheel is bigger on the 14/16’s. The muffler and the carb is also bigger on the 16’s. Thanks for the info about the flywheel and shroud differences. How does that $729...

129 =Time for a new Engine

I have given up on the K301A 12hp in my 129. I would like to go diesel, but anything I think about sort of derails also getting to use the PTO and mower deck. I am considering going this route: http://shop.kustomlawnandgarden.com/KOHLER-ENGINES-REMANUFACTURED_c4.htm I would like to step up in power ...

K301 and K301A Pistons/Rods Interchangeable ???

Thirteen months to the day after getting my engine back together due to the stupid dipper falling off and snapping the connecting rod, it has happened again. I have found a complete piston/rod/rings assembly and have searched in vain for this answer = are K301 and K301A pistons/rods interchangeable ...

Re: High-boss vs Low-boss Cylinder Head ???

The 3 studs that are “extra”, are they along the flywheel side of the block? If so it’s posable that your engine was replaced with a short block or new engine for a narrow frame. Is your engine black from the factory? Often times the engines sold as replacement would fit many models if the changes ...

I found this: http://gardentractorpullingtips.com/cylhead.htm >>>Amended: According to what I have read thus far, my 1-1/2" bolts are correct for the head that I think I have, 4th Generation. My spark-plug is directly over the exhaust valve. The High-boss head is earlier and the Low-boss is supposed...

High-boss vs Low-boss Cylinder Head ???

Head-gasket blew and melted a channel in my head. Now I find that there are two variants, High-boss and Low-boss, the difference being in the thickness of the head-bolt "boss" and length of head-bolts. I am told that other than that, they will interchange. My head-bolts are 1-1/2" long with a mere 3...

Improved Air Cleaner

I just found this: https://www.partstree.com/models/129-2050220u-cub-cadet-garden-tractor/air-cleaner-extension-0/ I have seen a few homemade versions of this, but did not know that an OEM version was ever available. With a bit of brazing or welding, the snorkel would be easy to fabricate. The rear ...

Re: Starter or Relay or Something Else ???

Clean all wiring connections I disassembled and cleaned all connections and checked the integrity of the cables = still no go. I removed the belt and found that Goliath himself could not turn the starter by hand. I did manage to barely turn it with a big Crescent wrench. I am now rethinking things ...

Starter or Relay or Something Else ???

My 129 was starting easily right up until it choked out in some tall grass and did not have the wherewithal to crank itself with the old worn out battery. For several weeks, I had been having to jump-start it due to the old battery being about shot. When it died in the tall grass and we had to push ...

Re: Breather line into the air cleaner

I am not sure just what you have envisioned, but your question brought to mind the breather modification on a Cub Cadet that I have often seen at the antique tractor shows; it is a modification that I intend to implement on mine. It is rather simple, but quite effective. He brazed a length of tubing...

Re: What Size Battery ???

Yes garden tractor batteries are U1 size... and there is also an L or an R for left or right positive... Thanks; U1 L must be correct for the 129 and factory cables. If you got one that lasted 10 plus years, that's the one I'd buy again !!! The battery is the one that was in the mower when we bough...

What Size Battery ???

The more-than-ten-year-old battery in my Cub Cadet 129 is finally on it's last legs; I have to jump-start it; and, if it dies while mowing, I have to jump-start it again. It has no life at all. I searched for this and came up more bewildered than I already was. What "size" battery fits my Cub Cadet ...

Re: Last Year/Model for Genuine I-H Cub Cadet ???

Thanks to you guys, that alleviates some of my confusion. Mergers, take-overs, and buy-outs are seldom a good thing. When you drive up I-65 in Louisville, you can't even with any certainty point to a spot and say "There is where the big I-H factory used to be." When I was a kid, years and years ago,...

Last Year/Model for Genuine I-H Cub Cadet ???

I have searched this and keep coming up with overlapping information. It is my understanding that I-H sold the Cub Cadet line to MTD in 1981 and production was moved to Brownsville, Tennessee, with existing models then being phased out until the only thing Cub Cadet about them was the color. I guess...

Re: Points and Timing ???

The point is, a coil fires when the points are opened, so a wider gap will open the points sooner, thereby advancing the timing. Thanks for that explanation. I hope I can put the thought in my head into typed words that make sense. On considering your good explanation, the size of the eccent...

Points and Timing ???

At last night's tractor club meeting, we were discussing the Kohler engine's points and timing relationship and this question came up:

Which advances the timing, less points gap or more points gap ?

Thanks for reading and all help is appreciated.

As per your first post ...you had spark and it was running. Did you try ether? Or drain the carb and tank and fill with brand new from the pump gas. You said it sat for a little bit. I had a friend refill his snowblower with gas that had been sitting a while and had lot of water. He was at his wits...

Sorry for the delayed response; I had to wait for my packages to arrive and got busy in the meantime. I got two brand-new condensors and an analog multi-meter. I have two new condensors and an analog multi-meter on the way. A leaking 9-volt battery corrupted my analog meter, else I would have tested the old condensor. Please Help Me diagnose a no run situation ???

Recent history: Prior to this, the engine was starting/running the best it ever has. The connecting rod broke due to the dipper being broke; a very common scenario from what I gather. It sat in the driveway for a couple months while I gathered the resources to attempt repair. I pulled the engine; in...
