Re: 1650 Muffler

IH abandoned the "long pipe" muffler exit during the mid-model refresh of the QL. Said refresh included auto-release hydro valves, 82-Series style steering wheel, the larger front wheel bearings, and a switch from the cast iron front grille support and axle housings to an aluminium alloy. IH discove...

I think sticking valves may be the least of your problems if you look at that home-rigged air cleaner.

Not sure it even cleans the incoming air. Looks like a pie tin where a proper housing and paper element should be.

Could very well be the dreaded K-Series exhaust valve sticking situation, if what you describe is 10 minutes under load. Some have good results with additives, others pull the valve and clean the stem to sort out the problem.

Anyone know what this engine is? A buddy found it in a barn on the property he just purchased.

Thanks and cheers-

Re: spark plugs??

Anyway, the larger the plug gap will have more energy in the spark. Obviously if the gap is too large the ignition system will not make enough voltage to jump the gap. So the largest gap that will always fire is what you want.. The larger gap doesn't increase spark energy. It increases the accessib...

Kevin, you can always count on ease of manufacturing and parts interchangeability from most equipment companies. Especially in this older market segment.

You will need longer hangers too. Specific to SGTs with the 50 deck.

And BTW, that is a horsepower-limiting peg (flathead bronze screw in photo contacting the bellcrank tab) on the CH-18, which, when removed.... allows for full-throttle and the equivalent to a CH-20.... oldest trick in the book, shame on Kohler for doing what they did with the Mag15 (downsized carb) ...

Re: More help on my 1872

I recently (May 2012) installed a Command into a 682. Came across this thread while searching the site for info as I just acquired one of Steve Townsend's 782D models. Thought I'd illustrate the utter lack of resources and time "ingenuity product" of my efforts. This is what happens when you finish ...

Re: Boiling Oil ?

You could have very well seen water boiling out of the oil. Think deep-frying. Any oil over 212 F (100 C) will boil out the water diluting it. Relates to city driving and engines never fully warming up versus steady load turnpike cruising getting the oil up to a good operating temperature and evapor...

Re: Cub Cadet Hydro Fluid

An additive binds with the water in the oil and precipitates it out of the solution. It sinks to the bottom of the cavity/rear housing as it becomes more dense than the oil and it is there until you wipe it away during a fluid change. The risk is the gelatinous precipitate collecting on the paper fi...

They 18" versions don't have the same leakage problems as the metric size equivalent to 16x6.50-8 tires. Something about the way the bead seals against the rim- Perhaps the green machines may have more sealing issues.

I wish I could afford a set of the v 61 for my supers. They've come down a lot in price over the last few years but still a precious purchase. Miller carries Vredestein now too. Oscar Will's book "Cub Cadet: The First 45 Years"

4005 169s and 5247 126s were built. The 106 outsold it more than 3:1 at 16635 units produced.

Re: Look what followed me home...

I'd say that's not in bad shape at all.

Take a look at some of the items folks haul home and your 126 is seriously not that bad off!

The 126 is actually somewhat rare. A little over 5000 were built. The 106 was much more popular with its lower price point.

Good find!

Later QLs were also given aluminum front grille surrounds and axle housings. If you need more weight on your front end, the cast iron version of the grille surround weighs about 40 lbs. The only issue I've ever seen regarding the internal brake rears is the outer cap seizing in its bore. That was on...

The 'sharpening' refers to keeping a 90 degree edge on the hammers, as they will round out from use over time. Squaring them up will improve performance. I know because I did it to my 59M and its appetite for leaves went up when I flipped the hammers over, and end to end. I ran a file over the new c...

I replaced my Onan with a Mag 20. I used the ignition switch from an 1872. Took the lead which supplied 12V switched to the Onan's coil, and used it to ground the Mag's coil. There is an extra terminal on the 1872's switch which grounds the coil to cut the ignition. Similar principle as energizing t...

So we'll say 1983+ for the Haban deck. Interesting Todd! All my dealer pamphlets from the late 70s and early 80s through CCC's first in 1982 don't show the deck, but as you mention, include the blade. My point notwithstanding, the 982 was not designed around the deck, it was fit after the fact. JD40...

Re: SGT questions

Unless there's some history I'm not aware of, the 982 entered the market in 1979, with a 50A deck. The 60" Haban arrived much later under CCC, circa 1987. The JD 400 was released in 1975 with a 60" shaft driven belly mower. It took over 5 years for IHC to respond with the 982, and far longer for the...
