leaking axle cub cadet original
i recently changed the trans fluid in my 1961. the fluid was quite low but not empty. i filled up to the drain plug in the side of the case. now i have a leak in my axle shaft. what does it take to fix this? i looked at the parts breakdown and it does not look like these even had a seal and rely sol...

Re: removal of old badly rusted set screws
i think i need to see if i can get my hands on another clutch thats already been removed and see it i can measure the depth so i know where the bit must stop. then i would mark the bit with a piece of tape. trust me i looked inside those screws and there is no hex left to them. i know its not me bec...

Re: removal of old badly rusted set screws
there is nothing to bite on. the screws were already in bad shape. nothing metric or SAE is going to work, tried every size. if i drill these things out my biggest concern is to not drill into the crankshaft. my friend has piles of cub cadet parts so even if needed another PTO it wouldn't be a big d...

removal of old badly rusted set screws
im working on a K301 that belongs to a cub cadet 124. this is an unfinished project i would like to finish. several years ago i stripped, sandblasted, and painted the frame and sheet metal. it has sat up in my loft for the last couple of years and i really havent done much to it since. i have a narr...

cub cadet original clutch
i was thinking maybe this thing could use a clutch rebuild. the clutch seems to operate OK but i think the bearings could use replacement. can you still source clutch parts. i am guessing these clutches are not the same as the narrow frame tractors, as the design is completely unique. no other cub c...

Re: leveling the 38" timed deck
so i am guessing that the the deck being un-level is actually a result of the brackets wearing a little over 55 years of use? makes sense. too bad they weren't adjustable

leveling the 38" timed deck
i have new blades, new bearings, and i found a good set of pulley's. its off and mowing pretty good. my only complaint is that i cannot seem to get it leveled perfectly. the left side hangs down more then the discharge side. i dont know what i can do, if anything to make it the way it should be. i t...

very very impressed with timed deck
i have myself a nice mowing 1961 cub cadet now. i bought this tractor about a week ago. the deck is super solid no rust through or rot probably one of the nicest examples of these decks in existence. the hardware was toast. i replaced all 4 spindle bearings, got a set of used cogged pulleys that wer...

Re: timed deck belt tension
thanks. i moved the spindles over 2 holes and it relieved some of the tension. i think its where it should be. before there was so much tension it was somewhat difficult to turn the blades. a little too much resistance for my liking. is there an owners manual on this mower? what should be the correc...

timed deck belt tension
well i located a pretty decent set of pullies, i have all new bearings installed, and new blades. when to reassemble and the bearings felt good but i have way too much tension on the timing belt. how do i adjust the belt tension? this is the 38" timed deck on a cub cadet original.

Re: new to the forum
the farmall cub has significantly more actual power then the cub cadet. horsepower is about the most meaningless ruler ever used to measure power there ever was. however, the K161 is only rated at 7 hp and it is surprising how powerful it is for only being 7 hp. an original can mow some awfully deep...

Re: 54" Blade
i wasnt aware the 54" blade was ever made for the cub cadet. that's the same size blade on my farmall cub and that's a larger and heavier tractor then a cub cadet. how does a '82 series handle the 54" blade. i ran a 782 a couple times for mowing and for mowing i was impressed, they are a powerhouse.

Re: new to the forum
i was thinking about headlights. i saw some that were made for the original, expensive. i have also seen repoduction "tear-drop" style like the ones that are on my farmall. you can buy them at $35 a pop. i think they would look just as good on the cub cadet, just paint them white. i think you would ...

Re: Concerns About Engine Oil
cen-pe-co. period. great stuff some of the best oil on the market. it has much better additives then the crap sold at retail. it is made out of better base stocks as well. its a paraffin based oil instead of ash based. you can go longer on drain intervals without hurting anything. the guys that sell...

Re: new to the forum
the cub cadet is straight and mostly rust free. typical surface rust. the cub cadet is complete and is a good running tractor for being 50 years old. im not going to have to spend $500 rebuilding the engine anytime soon. mowed my 2 acre lawn with it today, and besides some awful noise coming from th...

new to the forum
well im new to the forum but not new to IH tractors. i have owned several IH cub cadets and i currently own a farmall cub and just bought a mechanically good original cub cadet. the cub cadet needs mostly cosmetic work, but i have some deck issues to sort out. its the timed 38" mower deck and the tw...
