Re: 1970 model 147 now leaks Hy-Tran oil since changing it.

Holy smokes, that was quite an explanation. I suppose I will simply continue to run the tractor for now and add HY-TRAN as needed to replace the stuff that leaks out.  On Sunday, I used kerosene soaked rags to wipe down everything underneath. I then mowed and will look at the underside to see what I...

I found him with a google search, and just called and left a message. Thanks for the tip.

Re: 1970 model 147 now leaks Hy-Tran oil since changing it.

Do you know where I might find one of these clutches? Looks like a good solution and preventive measure.

Re: 1970 model 147 now leaks Hy-Tran oil since changing it.

I don't believe it has a clutch. The guy who restored it warned me to be careful when using the lift. He told me that if I held the switch for too long when raising or lower it, I might strip the gears. So, I only use it just to raise or lower the deck to the height setting bracket. Once there, I pr...

Re: 1970 model 147 now leaks Hy-Tran oil since changing it.

I have no plans on selling this Cub--at least, not yet! I mostly enjoy working on it, and running it! What a beast she is compared to anything that is new. In fact, I feel kinda sorry fer the fellers around me who are running new equipment! Anyway, so long as the repairs and maintenance required is ...

Re: 1970 model 147 now leaks Hy-Tran oil since changing it.

Thanks, gentlemen (these days, I'm sometimes unsure I can even use the word "gentlemen", because well, things have gotten weird--but I will take the risk of being "cancelled" or "called out" by the thought police who lurk seemingly everywhere), for your helpful replies.  What is confusing is that th...

1970 model 147 now leaks Hy-Tran oil since changing it.

Fellow Cubbers: I have been enjoying my Cub Cadet 147 since purchasing it nearly a year ago, using it only to mow less than a half acre of grass. I have done any required maintenance myself, which recently includes changing the HyTran oil, the transmission oil filter, and the cover plate gasket. The...

Re: Cub Cadet 147

I'll be damned. I think I have met Mark, but if not I sure know the name! I am both surprised and impressed that one or two of you fellas knows what a Swift is. I knew plenty of GA pilots who had never heard of one until I would pull up to the pump in mine. I have this bug that makes me like old stu...

Finding a mechanic in my area to work on my 147...

Hello again everybody. I bought a 147 this past June, and posted a query about carb issues and also some photos of it just in the past couple months. I got some good comments that helped me out. There was also some good banter that followed regarding snow removal options. Today, my questions is: doe...

Re: Cub Cadet 147

Oh, and by the way, I know of very few Swifts with the Franklin engine. I have only ever seen one, in fact, and it was a plane that was advertised for sale some years ago. It was gorgeous as I recall. That plane probably cruised at close to Vne (185 mph indicated).

Re: Cub Cadet 147

Well, I got my complex rating in a Mooney 201, and I can tell you that the flight characteristics are worlds apart on that plane and the Swift. Mine was up-engined to a Lycoming 180HP, which made it a real airplane. The Swift is a very nimble and responsive aircraft, while the Mooneys are not. The l...

Re: Cub Cadet 147

I know I don't need a Farmall Cub. I just need an excuse to buy one. Figure I'd mow with the Cadet and plow with the Farmall. And I will drive my Lamborghini around the area when I'm not driving my Cubs. I have to put a bumper sticker on my Lam that says, "My other vehicle is a Cub Cadet 147." Or, o...

Re: Cub Cadet 147

Well, I don't really pay close attention to fuel consumption, but I appreciate the comment about the undersized tank. And worse, my tank is not stock-- It's smaller than stock. No issue though since I just top off the tank before each mowing, and I only have to do about a third of an acre. The rest ...

Re: Cub Cadet 147

Well, no, I don't own a smart phone and never will. Hate 'em. I still intend to get photos of my Cub up soon--maybe this weekend. As for this carb-governor issue, I think I have it licked. I reset the carb hi speed screw and idle screw to factory, fired up the motor, and it ran well. I think I turne...

Re: Cub Cadet 147

Fellas, Sorry for the delay in responding to your very helpful troubleshooting suggestions. I'm in the process of moving back to Toledo (my birth town) from Columbus, and I don't always have ready internet access. I'm currently at a Columbus library using one of their computers. When I am back in To...

Newbie with recently acquired 147 and need for a mechanic

Hello members, I am new to this forum, and as a new old Cadet owner, I'm happy to be here. I just posted on the Shooting the Breeze forum describing my recently developed mechanical problem. Anyway, my main question is does anyone know of any mechanics in the greater Toledo area who works on old law...

Cub Cadet 147

Hello All: I am new to this website/forum, as I bought myself a restored 147 this past June. I think these old lawn tractors are better than anything made today, but I also know they are old and hence can be troublesome at times. Which leads me to my question. I've been using this tractor to mow my ...
