QA 42A on a 70

So I got a QA 42A snow thrower and thought it would fit on my 70, but the manual says I need an adapter package. My cub has two bolts holding on the mule drive pulley bracket, and the QA 42A only has one bolt. Anyone know where I can get the adapter or have one made? I have included a picture of the...

Re: K181 connecting rods

I don't think the rods for K161 and K181 are interchangeable. I think the K161 rod is longer than the K181 rod. I was rebuilding a K181 block and accidentially ordered a K161 rod and the piston extended above the top of the cylinder. Orderd a K181 rod and all is well.

Model 70 countershaft

Hey there,

Anyone have a good thread to look at for completely tearing down a model 70 rear end? I think my countershaft bearings are toast.

I've done some searches on the site, but cannot find a post on a complete rear end teardown.

Thanks,

Re: Hard restarts

I'll have to recheck the settings. It ran great the other day, but didnt have to shut it off and immediately restart it. It did sit for about 10 - 15 min and restarted fine.

Re: Hard restarts

I'm confident the float is set correctly, but I'll have to take a look at the timing and see. I can get it restarted if I set it a full throttle. If I use the choke, it will not start no matter where the throttle is set. Once it goes I get black smoke for about 2 seconds, and then all is well.

Hard restarts

I just finished rebuilding the carb for my model 70 and it runs great. The one thing that is happening is that after it runs for a while and I shut it off, it is hard to start and looks like it is flooded when it finally gets going. It then runs great until I shut it off and try to start it again. A...

Re: Carb on a 70

I rebuilt the older Kohler carb as the Carter N carb is in bad need of bushings for the throttle shaft.

It runs a lot better now. Even slow idles - something the Walbro refused to do.

Carb on a 70

Well, My 70 has a Walbro carb on it that I rebuilt and I really don't like it. I can't get it to slow idle at all, no matter how I adjust it. I rebuilt the engine a couple of years ago with a .10 over piston, .10 under rod, rings and a valve job. My question is that I also have a Carter and a Kohler...

Re: Noisy creeper

I changed the fluid in the transaxle when I put the creeper on and there wasn't any water in it at all. Looks like I'll have to tear into the rear end - again. I used Hy Tran in the transmission. I did tighten up the shift forks when I had the trans apart last summer because they were loose. Is that...

Re: Noisy creeper

It's not the shaft bearing, because it doesn't make any noise in neutral.

So do you guys think that it's low on oil? I'll try the GL-5 85 weight oil and the fish tank tub fill method. Of course, I have to fix my S/G first.

Noisy creeper

The creeper on my 70 is quite noisy. It sounds like a high rev - gear type of noise and it does it whether in high or low. I assume it is not supposed to make any noise. When I installed it last summer, I filled it with Hy Tran.

Re: paint

Yeah, the new paint at TSC isn't so great. I repainted my mower deck and the paint never dried. It stayed tacky and loose and I had to strip it again and repaint. This was on top of stripped metal with a primer coat. The second try was ok, but I'm not holding my breath that it will hold up. I had ne...

Re: Narrow Frame Creeper Driveshaft

Well, I added 3/16" to the shaft length and it's perfect now. It's rather strange that the 13.5 inch was too short.

Re: Narrow Frame Creeper Driveshaft

Mine didn't have a mark, or it was too rusted to see. I'll probably add a 1/4 inch to the new one since with the 13.5 inch shaft, the clutch plate was barely on the drive plate pins.

Re: Narrow Frame Creeper Driveshaft

Everything was installed correctly and was working fine. It's just that the clutch disc was at the very end of the pins on the driving disc, where they were about half way down the pins with the standard driveshaft. All the holes were in the same places too. It looked like the shaft was about 3/8 - ...

Narrow Frame Creeper Driveshaft

I installed a creeper drive on my model 70, and I am having driveshaft troubles. FIrst, read on a post that the creeper driveshaft is 14.5", so I had one made, but it's too long. I found an old assembled clutch for a creeper and it's 13.5" long, but when I installed it, the clutch disc barely goes o...

I've started rebuilding the center spindle on my 38" cast deck. Any tips on how to get the bearings out? Should I use a punch to get the old seals out? Right now they won't budge and I'll have to tear them apart to get them out. I also want to look over the bearings and replace the seals on the othe...

Re: Mower deck baffle

I greased the bearings, but I don't know how loud it should be. Guess I should compare it to another deck. I thought to record the decibels on the deck and see if anyone else has recorded theirs. The spindles turn freely and really don't have much play in them. I may take it apart this winter and re...

Mower deck baffle

Hey there,

I have a 38" pin on deck that has a rusted out baffle. Does anyone make these, or should I get one made? I figure the deck would work a lot better with one in place.

BTW, how much noise are these decks supposed to make. Mine is kind of noisy.

Hey All, I just put a 38 inch deck on my Model 70 and the PTO belt is about 2 inches too short. I have belt #490489R2 I think I need belt # 473462R4. Is this right? Also, my rear tires rub on the wheel mounts on the cast ends of the deck. I looked and I have 12x8.5 inch tires. I take it I need to ge...
