Re: Yard Hydrant Packing ???
A bit of Google searching and I found this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5qKQnQugxE It appears that Simmons has been using O-rings instead of that silly pasteboard all along; I can see no reason why O-rings should not work in our Campbell hydrants as the design is exactly the same. It looks lik...

Yard Hydrant Packing ???
I have several Campbell freeze-proof yard hydrants. If you are familiar with yard hydrants, then you already know that just in the top of the housing, underneath that brass packing adjuster nut, and around the stem/rod, is a tiny round pasteboard tube that is the "packing" This packing is supposed t...

C-149 Cub Cadet Crawler
I was organizing some old photos when I came across this picture of a 1973 C-149 Cub Cadet Crawler; I figured you guys might enjoy seeing it. HP_16-Jun-2007_056_I_WEB-1250.jpg I took this photo on 16-June-2007, some ten plus years ago, at the Russell Creek Antique Tractor Show in Adair County, Kentu...

..u do know that phone he was on was not hooked up (they don't use phones). We have had several differing sects of Amish and Mennonites living all around us for the last forty years and all of them have had phones and they love to talk on them, worse than old busy-body women. Re: Need Help Finding A Starter
All is well that ends well. I took the starter to the Mennonite shop and he FIXED it. Before attempting a fix, he measured it every which way and dug through page after page in big old-timey catalogs, then he got on the phone to some starter repairman's hotline that he was a member of; those guys fo...

Re: Greasing Chainsaw Bar Sprocket ???
Thanks, Tom; you have given me something to ponder and cogitate upon; BUT, it does sort of strongly go against my grain to not lube something that has a lube point. There is a parable and lesson learned about why I bought this new bar. I had a nearly new bar on the saw and was driving down a friend'...

Greasing Chainsaw Bar Sprocket ???
I have a Stihl 029 that I converted to use 3/8 chain, roller sprockets, etc.; 20" bar. Recently, I bought a new Oregon Power Match bar. All of my old bars have nose grease holes on both sides and always took grease easily. I have two of the typical old-school bar greasing "guns" that have always wor...

Well, I ?think? I managed to get the solenoid to snap that plunger in with authority; before I took it apart and cleaned everything up, it wouldn't even click; so, I may be out of the woods yet. Engine or transmission oil must circulate within these starters; when I pulled it apart, nasty black oil ...

George, glad it's working out for you. I have never had one go catastrophic, yet... We bought this 129 from an elderly gentleman whose hobby is refurbishing these old Cub Cadets; he often will use two or three to make one good one, then paints them to look brand-new plus new decals. Re: Deck Wheel Bolts ???
Oddly when looking at this I thought the only difference between the A decks and the C decks was the size of the drive pulley but the A deck has 7" wheels and the C deck has 6 ". When researching anything to do with these decks, I see reference to three deck designations, 44, 44a, and 44c; I have n...

Re: Speed up pulley for the deck
I was reading some of the old posts on another site about speeding up the deck to cut better. Some of the commercial zero turn decks really zing. I have a 44A deck on a 108 Cub. I came across a pulley in my saved junk that is a 4 1/4" over a 4 1/2. The original was a 5" over a 4 1/2. Has anyone used...

I still haven't located the vendor site in question.
I did, however, find and buy a pair of complete spindles, pulleys and all, on ebay that should be here within the week.

Post a picture. I need to learn how to do that; maybe while I have it out from under the mower I will wash the grass off and take several pictures for scientific purposes. I figured out that it is a 44a deck; it has all three pulleys concealed under a shield; it has skids instead of wheels on the f...

44" Deck Spindle and Pulley Suffer Tragic Death

Deck Wheel Bolts ???
The deck on my 129 is I think 44"; the blades measure 43-1/2" tip-to-tip; it has a wooden roller under the front-center. The deck wheels have seen much better days as the centers of both are broken such that they just flop and wobble around; I don't see what has kept them from coming off. As best I ...

Re: removal of old badly rusted set screws
Every frozen screw removal is different, depending on location and access, among other factors. I have NEVER in my entire mechanical life ever been able to successfully remove anything with so-called easy-outs, those tapered opposite-threaded extractor bits; they are so brittle that all they do is b...

I am so glad that you started this thread, as the same thoughts had been going through my poor over-taxed head. I guess I could research all the pulley diameters and do the math; but, does anyone know a close estimate of just how much faster the blades will spin using a 4-1/2" pulley as opposed to t...

Thanks, Tom. I have been researching those spark-plug-wire tachometers/hour-meters and have pretty much settled on the one that has a green backlight and says "TACH/HOUR" on the face. Their response is almost immediate and they are adjustable to match spark action with meter readout. I would have po...

So that is what all those little packages of shiny tape are for. I bet one of those would read revolutions of anything that had the tape on it; electric motor pulleys, wood lathes, alternator RPM to engine RPM comparison, etc. That could prove to be handy. I might just put that on my Christmas list....

I am always reading "set such and such to X-many RPM"; how do I measure the RPM of such things as my 129's 12HP Kohler and the saw-mill's 13HP Honda ?
Is there a hand-held device or what ?
Thanks for reading.

129 Throttle Control ???
Can someone explain just how the throttle control functions on my 12HP 129 I kind of believe either the spring on mine is a shade too long or something is out of adjustment. With cable-lever in wide-open position, I do not have the power and RPMs I think I should have and the engine surges or fluctu...

129 Mower Deck Falls Off
I figured to put this here in case someone else may ever run against the same situation. For the last several mowings, with no rhyme nor reason as to when or where, I would be mowing along and, all of a sudden, the deck would drop off from it's hangers. I would utter a few well-chosen epitaphs and r...

My dip-stick resides down low on the left/larboard side of the engine; it is accessible without raising the hood; it is also the only place I have found to add oil. Just to be clear, the stick has never completely came out of the tube; it just jumps loose such that oil can escape. I looked through m...

I may have plenty of blow-by, but that old worn-out dip-stick just sat in the tube and jiggled around; there was no friction/snugness whatsoever. I am gonna try your spring idea just to be on the safe side. As tight a fit as it now has, if there is blow-by and nowhere else for it to go, it will shoo...

Fix for DipStick ???
Since I have owned our 129, 12-HP Kohler, about once every third mowing, the oil dip-stick will jump loose and allow oil to get slung all over everything before I can see that it has happened. Each time it has done this, I spend the rest of that mowing session with one eyeball constantly on the dip-...
