Re: New Project

The push toward electrification is running rampant in my state and there are many of us that don't like it at all. For starters the vast majority of our electric service is imported. No one seems to make mention of that. Second, large rural sections of the grid lack the necessary improvements to sup...

Re: Scored at last local auction!!

There was a time when purchases such as yours were quite common, these days not so much any more. You did good! More than enough parts to round out one really nicely opted 125 for sure. I envision a sickle bar hydro lifted unit there and would go with the wide rear tires. While the seat on the one i...

Yes indeed Dave, 100% on that for sure! A care package arrived in my mail box today and honestly I hope not to use any of it for just now. DSCN0803.JPG I ought to mention that current manufacture Autolite plugs are imported and are packed this way. DSCN0791.JPG Older Autolite USA manufactured plugs ...

Re: K 241 running badly

There were multiple causes for the issues that I was experiencing. Other than regular oil changes and a couple of spark plug and air filter changes the engine had been largely neglected for well over ten years. I followed the advise posted here and ran a mix of Marvel Mystery oil at five ounces to o...

Re: Winter Snow and Storm Pics

We were off the grid for five days and four nights. While we had about two feet of heavy wet snow many surrounding areas reported as much as three and a half feet. Power companies from many areas were called in to assist with repair operations. The only real damage that we directly sustained was tha...

How very true indeed Dave. Here's a Delco condenser that I kept around without knowing if it was good or not. With how things are now it's hard to believe there's a Nor'Easter heading our way. But it will give me the chance to put my recent repairs to the test. Re: K 241 running badly

So here's a set of points that probably at one time overheated. I'm used to seeing the a bright silver spring color. This one has a straw hue to it. It does still have plenty of tension. DSCN0722.JPG Straw color is associated with temperatures in the 350 to 400 degree range so yeah I think that this...

Re: New Project

They were both very much underrated and way ahead of their time back in the day. They were very substantially constructed. Fifty years later it's all going full circle back to this. The problem with them was the battery tech back at that time was not able to compete with 33 cent a gallon gasoline. A...

Tom, I have this way of understating the obvious. After further review I came to realize that I was having my moment of clarity. The points have not been serviced since the engine rebuild. Re: K 241 running badly

Today I drove it like I stole it. Pushing back two foot high wet snow banks in second gear for almost an hour. It balked but it never stalled. It is all constipated with sticky crud inside and needs a good enema. And that burnt up crud at the exhaust manifold is leaky head gasket. I'll be pulling of...

Re: K 241 running badly

Thanks for the input Dave, here's what's new at this point. Bad fuel has never been my issue, I run only non ethanol and it smelled fresh. I changed out the carburetor with another one. It started right up and seemed to run well but that's been said before. With the driveway all cleaned up I'm fresh...

I'm embarrassed to report after all this how badly this thing is still running. The symptoms are more or less the same. It runs Ok for a half hour or so and then the power loss comes and rough running comes back. This most recent carburetor I installed has the bad habit of pouring fuel from out the ...

Re: K 241 running badly

Dave, regarding that thick composition gasket perhaps the older ones were a cardboard substrate, I really don't know. But a new one will be two regular thin gaskets sandwiched on to a center plastic insert. The whole thing will be just about 1/8" thick. They were called out as for use with the quiet...

Re: K 241 running badly

My bad Dave. Over tightening will create flange warpage issues but not tight enough will cause problems of it's own. Swapping out was the way to go. This old core cleaned up real nice but the seals were quite dried out. Throttle shaft is silky smooth too, seems to me I recall making an oversize one ...

K 241 running badly

The throttle response on my 102 began acting up last Summer. The engine had twelve years on a complete rebuild. It would only get worse as the engine got hotter, usually after a half hour or so. My thinking at the time was a valve sticking. After this last snow cleanup it really began to run terribl...

That was a good one. Ten more heading our way Wednesday. Power was out about 23 hours, that pole snapped in half from the strain.
I took this shot right after the power went out. Look at the trees. The deck looks clean but it had been shoveled off 3 times by then.

Re: Winter Snow and Storm Pics

What we have here is a real New England snow storm. I have plenty of shots with the driveway but very few of the road. Time to put the Johnson wool coat and mittens on, grab the walking poles and go. North I shall head. This one is another thick snow and there were branches coming down all around me...

Tom, that snow never fell out of the trees, it looks exactly the same as two days ago, maybe it's even icier. No power interruptions so far but honestly I can't recall anything like this before. DSCN0606.JPG This is definitely some real high moisture content stuff coming down. When it finally does quit I'm not even bothering with the QA42, it's too pasty. The trees are very much into the power lines and one branch snapping will shut the service down, Temp holding at 30 degrees but if the w...

Re: Ham and CB chatter

I answered my own question. What do I do now. Wait for it to burn out, that's what. After a time the smell of varnish was in the air. That's never good. Turns out the audio output transformer burned out. Too much voltage on the primary side. Enough of that and I sent it off to my restoration expert ...

Our first real snow storm was dense and heavy with moisture.
We lost electric for about 18 hours.
The QA 42 as having issues throwing this stuff and it jammed up several times. This was a difficult snow to push as well.
