Geezer ,its best to pull the rear out,might as well throw a cork gasket at it while your there.I have replaced those parts on a newer plastic hood /82 series style but its kinda tuff.It was hard to get the snap rings off.

Geezer there is a small plastic bushing on the base of the splined shaft that holds the chrome handle. you can un bolt the splined shaft down on the frame then push it up through the dahs so its up in the air and you can better work without damaging the dash tin. they can be a pain to get off .

Mike if you have nat gas you may want to look into co-ray-vac.it heats the objects and not the air.very nice heat

a decent set of caps with some marks or rust will fetch $300. plus and if you want to get them re chromed ,cheapest I found was $75.00 a cap so $700. isn`t really that bad if you want a set. I had 4 or 5 sets back in 2003 or 04 and I got $600. a set back then
