Re: Never had this happen

I think when this was rebuilt I was in middle school and it cost $142 which was a lot of what I had period. Just to follow up I installed two new bearings and new regulator. It charged right and seemed fine but after 20 minutes of light lawn sweeping burned again. This time I caught it sooner but lo...

Re: Never had this happen

Thanks for the help! Generators are one thing I never messed with too much besides basic rebuilds because we used to have an old man that rebuilt them dirt cheap when I was big into these. Now only my 73 and 102 even have one anymore. Once you mentioned that I cleaned up my existing generator real g...

Re: Never had this happen

I got lucky and could smell this from the rear vent hole and got it all off quick enough. Ironically I recently sold my last good one to a kid on the cheap to help him so guess I get to rebuild one quick. Sadly the bearings and field coils still looked pretty new. Would this be a short in the armatu...

Never had this happen

I decided to change it up and pull the old 73 out to cut grass today so I welded the deck and did a bunch of reworking on it and got it hooked up. About 30 minutes in I start hearing a whine that had to be generator. I finished the pass I was on and already started to smell something so got to a spo...

Re: Snow Blade Lift Height 1650

This isn't your issue since it used to be right but on a side note a narrow frame lift rod is a little different and if you had the wrong one that would cause the height issue. Secondly I agree on a sheared pin somewhere. It isn't terrible if it's lined up and you can beat it out. If not they can be...

Re: Breather line into the air cleaner

I'm not sure I fully understand but like the Quietline? They are closed and get their air from the flywheel housing. If so, just acquiring a few parts will get you what you want.

I'm still 50/50 on building this. The cost, mainly the tines, is going to be a bit unreasonable. I did get it all modeled up though.

Re: Cub cadet RTZ 50 problem

First off welcome! Secondly I don't own one or know how they work (30 years newer than my newest ones) but based on what you're saying I'd assume a linkage is broke on the pedal and not activating the hydro (assuming hydro) so the pedal is doing nothing and the hydro is freely going to the forward p...

Re: IH rock rake dimensions

Thanks to the generous members that got me some dimensions and detailed pictures. I have a good idea of it all now. Doesn't look terribly difficult, albeit time consuming. Right now I'm sourcing metal and tines and cheapest I'm at is going to cost over $500 just in material for all this. I'm looking...

IH rock rake dimensions

Does anyone have a rock rake they could get dimensions on? For instance, the length and what size steel of the cross bar and whether or not the part that goes to the frame is the same as the blade. I have a blade and could use a rake around the house but haven't found one in several years. I have a ...

Re: Noggin scratcher

I've seen a few come out and have some here I think. Aren't they slightly tapered and just pressed in if I remember right? I do remember tapping a few out from the bottom side in the past. Years of heating and cooling with a cast block and steel tube that expand and contract at different rates while...

Re: Need help identifying carb on 782

I never knew about the 16hp kit being different like that.

I haven't been to my dealer in who knows how many years. When you can get someone that knows what these mowers were, you'll still pay 3 times the cost.

Re: Need help identifying carb on 782

The adjusters on it look like a Carter. The adjustable Walbro has the main jet down by the bowl facing downward. Don't know if they consider that a Kohler but doesn't look like a Walbro.

Re: IH Registry Days and Members

I barely had a driver's license when I got on the registry. Got into the hobby pretty serious, had many Cubs over the years, restored or repainted over 20 I believe, and still check in daily but really slowed down on them. I have 7 still that are all repainted and about as repaired as they can be an...

Re: 1250 Engine Trouble

Coil can possibly do that. Usually takes a bit longer though. Poor fuel flow to carburetor? I've had more quietline than anything with sticky exhaust valves with similar symptoms. I'm guessing the shielding traps more heat and is tougher on valves?

Re: Uneven piston gap to Cylinder walls

Good deal. Even worn a lot of those engines will run well. Sounds like yours was bored once already. Easy way to check front pto is try to turn it by hand with motor off and the pto lever forward. It shouldn't turn without turning the motor. Pull the lever back to disengage the pto (push against the...

Re: m12/k301

Carbon wasn't uncommon. I think there's even a service interval on taking the head off and cleaning. Rebuild kits for a K301 are found about anywhere from cheap kits on ebay, Stens has decent aftermarket kits, or if you plan to use it a lot I recommend spending the extra money and getting OEM Kohler...

Re: m12/k301

It's factory. All the heads were aluminum and blocks cast iron on the Kohlers except the twins maybe? I think I have some literature somewhere that says blocks went to aluminum with cast sleeves somewhere in the 80's on the series after the x82s in 1986. That info is all from memory but a cast iron ...

Re: Bought a Yellow and white 982 oddball

That one could have been a repaint but mtd did sell yellow and white x82 series tractors after 1981 but still made some of them red for the IH dealers to fulfill an existing contract when they bought cub cadet from IH or something like that. I've seen several yellow ones and have owned a 482 and 782...

Thanks. I never posted a want ad. Hit a few cub parts vendors and ebay and figured it was that or have it done over the weekend before a used one was even shipped. Hindsight I guess I should have now

Basket pulley refurb

Just thought I'd share this. My 73 was making motor knocking sounds but ran fine for many years and sounded like coming from front pto. Got annoyed and started to tear into stuff and realized the basket pulley was flopping around. Tore it all loose and fortunately the crank was within a few thousand...

Re: Chunk of metal in the oil

Didn't a lot of the old connecting rods have a little keeper you bend over the nuts or bolts when tight? Can't remember if it's Kohlers or other stuff I've torn into. Could be part of that and not affect the engine performance

Re: Tiller and Plow Blade

Yes that's the gearbox and looks correct. The blade looks right too but from the looks of the rear lift on that tractor with gearbox it's on a narrow frame. Might ask him what it came off of. At 350 you can't go wrong. The long belt to the front pto is kind of pricey but I've used a $15 aftermarket ...
