Re: Cub blower for the first time!

I would opt for vacuum myself. I don't consider the 551 an upgrade really, Have both and the older units are built a lot better. The downside is they are much heavier because of that. I just cut up an old 451 housing to get the steel section the chute attaches to, that is going to be modified to rep...

Re: Cub blower for the first time!

That thing is a collectors item, I've never seen one actually on a blower! I've had at least ten different 450/451s through here and it was gone on every one of them for that very reason. Sounds like you might have a PTO electrical issue causing low voltage, these blowers like power and on a good ru...

No problem, I've been inside a few of them. Oh, if you don't want to buy the benalene 920 grease or cannot find it for a reasonable price, Because you will have it cleaned out you can use a more common grease, I've been using the Super S CPGRS.1232.097 Cotton Picker Spindle Grease 00 in mine, seems ...

Re: Cub blower for the first time!

I just look at the series as having the two serial numbers, but I have seen a 1863 that had a 5" clutch. If it had the 450 box and the clutch is a 6" you will know it real quick, they sound like they are going to fly apart with the engine revved up. The spirals turn at single stage speeds !

Re: 450 Spiral Gear

That isn't a good sign. Removal isn't bad but it's not fun. Remove the two end bearings for the spiral auger support shaft, then the top strut bolt that supports the gearbox and you pull the entire rotating assembly out as a unit, including the impeller. Once out you can remove the shear bolts prom ...

Re: 450 Spiral Gear

The original style isn't available but the new one they have will interchange as the front boxes didn't change with the newer units, the 450, 451, 551 and even many of the newer blowers use the same gearbox. The internal parts are available but you may find a complete replacement unit to be cheaper ...

Re: Cub blower for the first time!

What serial number is that 1864? They had two ranges on them below 821,060 they used the 450 above it used the 451. The 451 on the early tractor will spin the blower slow and cause problems. The difference is in the clutch, early has a smaller clutch pulley.

That shouldn't be an issue. On mine it has both front and rear and really needs me to do some work on them... Already got fed up with the center hole being worn so that got bored out and insert bushings like the wheels have installed.

Re: Rear anti-scalp roller

I have the same issue on my 317 deck when mowing the crowned area at the edge of the road. The deck wheels straddle it enough that the anti-scalp roller is laying on the ground. Normally my solution is to simply lift the deck up and "carry" it to mow that area. I can see where moving the roller woul...

So I blew the belt on the newest 451 while trying to pump some of the HEAVY WET crap "snow" that came a few days ago. I had a complete kit on the shelf and used the line from it. I did that on a 1641 and didn't use that line. I'll look and see if I have the power version still off, I plan on using it on the other super but I could measure it up if that would help. Also have a couple other pieces, I'd need to look a...

Re: Cyclops front hydraulics

There is the short nipple that goes between the valves, I made one using the end off an old line and dressed up the opposite end to match the factory fitting. The factory lift lines are too short to reach the front, but you can use the upper sections to make new lines if you have a hydraulics shop a...

Re: Replacement lower discharge chute for 551 snow blower

The current part number is 731-0903E for the lower chute, if the teeth are chewed up you may want to replace the chute keepers as well as they get worn and cause binding. Those are # 731-0851A. Another common reason for the teeth to wear is if the rotator screw isn't adjusted correctly. If it's out ...

That seems to be the way many were bypassed. The 1641 I have was just removed from the posts and then mounted with the lever off to the side, the latest super still has it wired per the factory! Only wiring change I've found on it was someone replaced the seat switch with a different one and grafted...

Re: PTO Switch 1811

The reverse switch on mine gets repurposed and turns on a back up LEDs mounted next to the rear marker lights. Makes it so much nicer when you're trying to back up in dark spaces. I use the deck up tight against things while trimming so don't want it shutting off. Also bypassed the seat switch, but ...

I have a Sims cab for my super but the doors are beat from age. The "clear" plastic has shrunk and the velcro has peeled free of the frame. What doofus thought a plastic belt cover was a good idea?

So many of you know the 450 and 451 came with that dumb plastic belt "cover" on it. Thing is that every one I have seen has either a slot burned through it or it's shredded to the point it's useless. Then they realized that the cover was getting heated by the engine heat and exhaust so they made the...

450 and 451 use a 6" idler #756-0507, 551 uses a 7" #756-3090. The only thing special about the factory parts are the inserts they pressed into the bearing to allow the use of a bolt. The Stens 280-870 6" idler is the twin to the factory 756-0507 part but you need the inserts from the old unit, thos...

The belt comes from the clutch straight down to the two idlers then straight back from them to the pulley on the deck. On the lift frame it will be above the cross brace. Oddball question 2... What was the rational for the change from the one piece tie rod set up on the garden tractors to the center swivel and dual tie rods on the supers?
