Re: Gear transmission evaluation for rebuild

Dave,
On the ones that are hard to get in and out just do a little grinding till they go in and out easier. I helped a friend put in a Midwest billet carrier and we had to do a good bit of grinding
to get it in and out. It doesn't take as much as you would think at first though.

Re: spark plugs??

Adrian, How old is your manual? I'm pretty sure Kohler recommends the RV17YC4 in all the flathead twins. I remember that from a Kohler service school in the early 1990s. That was an update from the orginal recommendation of the RV15YC. I have had good luck with Bosch Platinums in my KT17 even though...

Paper gasket material is probably to thick. Get in touch with one of the guys who part them out or Midwest Super Cub for shims.

Re: Clutch adjustment

The 9/32" is measured at the pedal stop rather than out at the pedal itself. The three main things that need to happen are; When the clutch is engaged, there needs to be SOME clearence between the throwout arm and the bearing so that the bearing isn't turning. The clutch needs to fully disengage bef...

Re: Gear transmission evaluation for rebuild

Pulling top shaft will run $75 - 80. 2/3 gear set runs about $130. 1/R gear set is a little less. Should be able to find good used ones a lot cheaper. Unless you are wanting to change gear ratios. I don't think the aftermarket even makes the stock type 1st/Rev top gear (no reason to). They make it s...

Re: Gear transmission evaluation for rebuild

The rear pinion bearing is special because the inner race has to float in the rollers. This allows the front bearing to locate the pinion front to rear.
Dave is right about the shift rails. Although you could weld them up and file them back down.

Re: Gear transmission evaluation for rebuild

Make sure the acid wash doesn't remove the red coating from the inside. Otherwise it might leak oil. You will need a dial indicator to check the backlash and some sort of pull scale to check the bearing preload. You will probably also need to check the ring & pinion tooth mesh if you are replacing t...

The shims come in different thicknesses. And yes the shims are to adjust the carrier bearing preload and the backlash.

Re: Gear transmission evaluation for rebuild

I don't think there is room to push it all the way through. I would stand it up and soak the plunger good with PB blaster then try gently prying it towards the front. Be careful not to damage the lining pucks. They usually aren't as tight as they might seem because there was usually some fluid seeped...

Re: KT17 or a Magnum Engine

The series I only had pressure lube to the mains and not the rods. The rods were splash lubed. If the oil level was low, and/or the operator was mowing on hills, the rods could be starved for oil. There are probably a lot of them still running out there. No matter what, with all these opposed engine...

I have worked on quite a few of them mostly modifying them for tractor pulling. A stock rebuild is pretty straightforward. It helps if you download the manual and have that handy when you are working on them.

Re: Diesel repower?

I have a loader on a 12hp hydro and it does just fine and I usually only run half throttle. The hydro probably takes 2hp to run so 10hp gear would be comparable. And a 10hp diesel will probably have more torque than even a 12hp gas. You can probably turn the fuel up on the diesel to get more power i...

None of the IH tractors came with series II engines. Only the very late red CCC tractors had them. Either the series II or the Magnum are good engines. There are two different versions of the series II. The late ones had provision to add an oil filter. If the magneto goes bad on a Magnum, you have t...

Niether the input pinion nor the top trans shaft should have any movement. If they do the bearings are probably shot.

Those bolts along with two more behind the big gear hold the reduction housing on.

When you change the tooth count on one gear, you have to change the other or change the distance between them or they won't mesh.

The reason for the thicker disc is for strength of the disc itself. More strength was needed with the higher hp tractors to keep the fingers from breaking off. Some of the later ones used double springs for more clamping force.

I have an AC welder and I run 7018s without much trouble. They do like to stick though. I run 3/32 at 90 amp and 1/8 at 105. They suck for tacking though. I use 6013 for tacking then final weld with 7018. I keep some 6011s around for out of position welding, but otherwise I hate them. If I use them ...

Charlie,
I was always taught that any time you remove the carb, it could disturb the syncronization between the governor and the carb. So you should always check that anytime you change or remove any related components.

Re: Why didn't IH build 14 hp or 16 hp gear drives?

The valves are from a 3000 series Cub Cadet. The ones from a cyclops would be easier to work with. They are stackeable so you can put several together. The ports have to be drilled and tapped for 1/4 NPT or you have to use the stock oring style tubes. The cylinder is a Cub Cadet power steering cylin...

Most economical would be to convert to hand lift from a 127, 125 etc. For mowing or using a front blade it doesn't take that much effort. I have never seen Harbor Freight carrying actuators, but Northern Hydraulics probably does. Another place you may find them for a reasonable price is http://www.s...
