Re: Carb on a 70

The Carter or Kohler (same carb, Kohler owned the rights to the Carter "D" carbs) would be my choice, they are simpler, easier to rebuild, and more adjustable.

Re: ???'s hub city pto reverser...looking for help

Since the casting was designed for the ring gear/carrier fit for a Cub, the concern was whether or not the casting and or ring gear would hold up if ring gear/carrier was flipped for use in the Cub Cadet, something to do with the angle of the teeth on the ring gear if I remember correctly. What ever...

Re: ???'s hub city pto reverser...looking for help

Dave, That is not correct. The rear PTO on the Farmall Cub and the Cub Cadet both are driven from the top shaft of the transmission (same basic transmission) and turn the same direction, counter clockwise as you stand behind and look at the PTO, which is opposite of a standard PTO. As you look at th...

Re: Cub Cadet 3185???

BB, I don't own one of them, and have never driven one, but before you get too deep in it you might want to get it running and driving. When I was looking at new ones, local dealer told me they had more problems with the hydro in the 3000's (SunStrand I think) than with other models (Auto Gear) . Al...

Re: Noisy creeper

The shifting forks should be tight, but if you are going to remove the transmission anyway, it won't take much to remove the top plate and check them to be sure they are not bent/broken/loose or rubbing on a gear or something when the trans is in gear.

Re: Noisy creeper

When the tractor is running, clutch engaged, and the transmission in neutral, the driveshaft, creeper, the input shaft and the top shaft of the transmission are all turning. If there is no noise, then it leads me to believe the noise is probably the front bearing on the bottom shaft of the transmiss...

Re: Noisy creeper

Are you sure it is the creeper and not the input shaft bearing? Put the tractor in neutral with the engine running and clutch engaged and see if you still have the noise. Check the oil in the creeper, they are bad about pushing the oil out the breather.

Re: creeper keeps poping out of gear

You need to take the creeper out and and I believe you will find the the ends of the shifting yoke are worn where they fit in the shifter collar, and do not move the collar far enough to complete the shift. The yokes are NA and you will have to find a good used one or repair that one. The internal p...

David,
Look around on the Kohler web sight, and there is (or use to be) a link to get some tech/questions help. I used that for answers about the K161 that was in the prototype that Tim D, now has.

Jeff,
The cranks are different than you list. The K241 has a 2.875 stroke, the K301, 321, and 341 have a 3.250 stroke.

Jess,
The seller is a forum member and good for him. I sold a working Grote tail light with a new lens on the same auction site a few years ago for $156.00, so based on that, that was not a bad price for the whole set.

Re: CC 100 Some Engine Pics Needed

There are 37 different crankshafts for the K 241 10 hp engine, mostly due to the length, diameter, and shape, of the PTO end of the crank. You need to look for a crank for an engine used in a Cub Cadet (same engine spec number), rather than just looking for one "that looks like it".

Re: Trunion repair without welding.

As I stated above, the tractor found a new home just after this was done (a year and a half ago), so I do not know how the repair is holding up, but I have no reason to believe it is not still good. Use 2 plates, to help keep the damper springs and pins centered in the opening.

Paul,
I use to go but haven't been the last couple of years. I don't know what half that stuff is or does anymore, and the tractors don't look like tractors. I would go and walk around till I got tired, and then go back home. Anymore, that dosen't take too long.

Re: Cub Cadet Dozer

Crawler looks good Paul. Would the welded steel brackets work better than the cast ones? I have seen the welded steel brackets, but don't know that I have ever seen the cast aluminum brackets (or cast iron), but then most of what I mess with have internal brakes. I have a pair of the welded steel if...

Re: early model 70

The IH casting date code reads Month, Day, Year, with numbers for the Month and Day and a letter for the year. Production of the model 70 and 100 started in late August 1963 with S/N 65458. Depending on when it was built, the S/N for your 70 should be on the right side of the gear reduction housing ...

Re: early model 70

The date code 12-2-J is December 2nd 1963, the 10-4-J is October 4th 1963. The castings were normally allowed to "age" before they were used sometimes up to 6 or more months so the tractor was probably built in the first few months of 1964.

Re: early model 70

I think you will find that the engine with the dipstick under the S/G either has an engine, or the oil pan, from a 7 hp Original, and the frame was notched by a previous owner to provide clearance for the dipstick. There is at least one prototype model 70 known, and it has the same engine/dipstick a...
