Re: SERIAL NUMBER QUESTION

BK, the first 7 numbers are the machine code. It probably starts with 205 which means it is a lawn tractor then the following 4 tell what model you have. A 129 should be 0046, 0220,0221,0222 or 0223. I think that the U stands for US built (not sure on that) and the following numbers are the serial ...

SERIAL NUMBER QUESTION

In regards to my 129, I often see a split in parts and information, depending on whether the serial # is 481999 and lower, or 482000 and higher. Located on the left-side of my frame, just under the PTO shifter-lever and above the brake-pedal, is a riveted on plate. The only information still legible...

I found a bit of information here :

Can someone show a good picture of a new PTO button and also one made of brass ??

What brass object are people using to make these, a brass bolt or what ??

PTO/CLUTCH DIS-ENGAGER

On my 129, whatever is supposed to be on the steel lever that presses the PTO-clutch is worn to oblivion and a groove has worn into the lever; sparks flew and I fear the pressure-plate has suffered damage. What is supposed to be located in that 5/16-ish hole on the clutch dis-engaging lever; a pictu...

DIPSTICK

Does anyone know how much oil is represented between ADD and FULL on the dipstick in my 12-HP KOHLER model-129 ??

In other words, if the dipstick reads right on ADD, how much oil will bring it to exactly FULL ??

Thanks.

Re: What OIL for MODEL 129 with Kohler Engine ???

Thanks, ihcctim.

That is a point I had not pondered upon and makes very good sense to me.

By "low ash", do you mean non-detergent or detergent oil ??

While on the subject, what is the engine-oil capacity of the engine in in my 129; if I understand correctly, 12-horse Kohler.

Thanks.

Re: GASOLINE ???

Now, as far as MMO... flathead engines like the K-series Kohlers, are thermally very contorted. The result, is that oil residue tends to build up on the valve stems, and eventually, becomes a plaque that jambs up between the stem and guide, making the valve 'stick' open. Putting some MMO in the gas...

Those pictures are very helpful; and, quite professional photography as well. That GATES belt looks good on there; I am a GATES man myself on things that might get me in trouble many miles from home. Thanks for pointing out the belt guide document. Re: What OIL for MODEL 129 with Kohler Engine ???

It is getting harder and harder to find engine oil that still has a decent additive package. I found a bulk supplier for the old-school API-CI4+ 15W-40 that I use; it is impossible to find any other than emmissions-friendly API-CJ4 at the parts-stores, Walmarts, and such. The emissions-friendly oils...

Re: What OIL for MODEL 129 with Kohler Engine ???

Kohler says to use 30W when the temps are above 32 degrees, 10W-30 or 40 from zero to 32, 5W-20 or 5W-30 from -2 or below up to 32 degrees, all should be Service Class SF or SG. 10W-30 and 40 are not recommended (by Kohler) above 32 degrees. Is that 30-WT NON-detergent or detergent ?? Thanks. I see...

GASOLINE ???

I am fairly certain that my 129 pre-dates the advent of un-leaded gas and all of it's resultant headaches. I remember having valve-seats to rapidly deteriorate before being replaced with the modern ones that could withstand the lack of lube. I have already ran a couple tank-fuls of plain-jane 87-oct...

What OIL for MODEL 129 with Kohler Engine ???

What engine-oil should I use in my 12-horse Kohler ?? For nearly a hundred years, I have used 15W-40 CI-4+ (never that CJ-4 poison) in everything from push-mowers to road-tractors, but it seems like I read somewhere that these engines are extremely particular as to which oil should be used. Thank you.

This information has been most helpful and is much appreciated.

I doubt all-thread would be up to such a task, so I will have to procure a length of rod.

Re: 129 Lift Handle Repair

The lift rods can be a little tricky to repair but they're rather simple. The push button is suppose to unscrew. I use a pair of pliers because if you use visegrips and there is resistance you can twist the button off which renders a mess. The button has a deep relief area in the middle for the loc...

I am also interested in this. My recently purchased 129 is entirely missing the bottom rod of the blade-height adjuster.
