Re: Loader Subframe pics please

Were you planning on running direct-driven, or belted? If belted, the only thing you'd be challenged by, is running it faster than it's continuous-duty speed suggested... actually, you'd be doing that with direct even moreso. Think I'd shoot for either a higher continuous-speed rating, or a belted-d...

Re: Loader Subframe pics please

8gpm IS pretty high volume for those cylinders, but keep in mind that one can always throttle the engine back a bit, or not pull the handle full-stroke, to go slower. My pump runs 1.2ci/revolution at half-engine-speed, so 1800rpm x 1.5ci = 2160 cubic inches per minute... or (divided by 231) 9.3gpm. ...

Re: Loader Subframe pics please

Pictures #7 and #8 out of Farmallgray's posting are of my Loader-Mutt. The rear-end mount has no hardware- it just slides over the axle housings, and there's enough slop in there to allow the frame to flex. The girdle-plates on the right and left side of the frame taper work out great... I have not ...

Re: Industrial 3-phase welders for home use!

Hi Shorty! The H-K conversion only applies to three-phase welding transformers, but I have been pondering other possibilities. For a Bridgeport, or any other power tools, a Rotary Phase Converter or a Variable Frequency Drive are the best solutions. I have and use both, but my preference for ANY spi...

Re: Hawk-Bilt Ground Saw

Well, I'm thinkin' that'd be something the likes of Junkyard Wars and American Chopper have NEVER seen... It'd hafta be a big shop, 'cause I'd bring all my machine tools, welding equipment, electronics and radio shop... probably take 8 semi trailers in volume... but probably 12 in capacity... to get...

Industrial 3-phase welders for home use!

Hey all- For any of you interested in getting a really good welder, for dirt-cheap, it is very possible to run many 3-phase welders off of single phase power, at full output and duty cycle. Peter Haas and I came up with a conversion technique that I experimented with and proved on the Miller CP-200,...

Reversing and ratios

Hi Paul- If you've got a guy that can make the gearbox, here's an idea: Find a location down the length of the frame and transaxle where your driveshaft will 'fit'... and then get a center-to-center dimension between that point, and your PTO shaft. Next, look for a pair of gears that will yield your...

In Mud... well, if there's a crust on top, it's kinda like pushing a chainsaw into apple pie.... but it looks more like French Silk... but it sure doesn't TASTE like it. I've got this Ditch Witch (on steel tracks with grousers) and it really loved trenching frozen dirt. Problem with muddy, is that t...

Re: Holding your Kohler in an engine stand

Hmmm...

When I go to put an engine in, or remove it from the engine stand, I always bolt the bracket to the engine, then lift the whole thing up, and slip it in the stand... and reverse the process to remove... that way I'm not suspending an engine while tryin' to start bolts 'n stuff...

Re: Great way to clean/derust small parts!!!

Sounds like a great idea! Several years ago, I built a 30" square steel box, and placed it on a spindle at an angle about 30 degrees off vertical, powered it by a gearmotor turning about one turn per second. I throw in some pretty big castings and fabrications, and then throw in a few shovels of gra...

Re: Hawk-Bilt Ground Saw

Tyler- As long as you don't have big rocks frozen in the ground, ANY trencher will do a nicer job in the wintertime- rather than having rough trench walls with loose dirt, it's SHINY SMOOTH!!! I did a bunch of trenching around my farm using a very early track-driven mechanical Ditch Witch... when it...

Re: Hawk-Bilt Ground Saw

Okay, well, if he's got it set to drive straight off the pinion, then you're in good terms to start with ANY type of driveline, because you'll be able to use your gear selection without having any complexity afterward. You're correct that the groundsaw has a cooler, and the cooler results in loss. T...

Re: Gear drive Hydraulics

I think trying to stuff an entire charge pump setup in there would be a major PITA in comparison to belt driving something tiny off the engine. And I'll bop Gonzo over the head for referring to the pump as the 'least debris tolerant'... because the pump really isn't intolerant... abused, yes, and ak...

Re: Hawk-Bilt Ground Saw

Okay, so... how about driving a small fixed-displacement hydraulic pump off of the pinion, and plumbing it to a hydraulic motor on the front axle... That way, your transmission and PTO speed are irrelevant? Hydraulic FWA... like the combines have? How would you get the speeds to match? Getting spee...

Re: Hawk-Bilt Ground Saw

Hmmm... perhaps I didn't make the concept clear enough... Don't use the PTO to drive the front axle... if you do, you'll lose the ability to use the transmission to select your ground ratio. Instead, install a hydraulic pump inside the transaxle, and drive the hydraulic pump off the PINION SHAFT... ...

Re: Help me find this guy!!!

Yeah, Jeff- it is. Y'know, sometimes things fall apart... and sometimes they fall back together. Sometimes we think we see failure, when really, all we're really getting is a delayed-reaction of success. I tend to get lots of the latter, especially when I have too danged many other things going on. ...

Re: Gear drive Hydraulics

Hi Guys, Hi Tim! You'll want to run a suction SCREEN on the pickup tube, but not a fine 'filter'. As John noted, a gear-type pump will easily manage most crud that'd come through, but you don't want the screen do do anything more than stop the large pieces, because doing so will cause the screen to ...

Re: Power Beyond Hydraulic valves

Power Beyond is a pretty simple thing. When you design a fluid power system, you have 'open center' systems, and 'closed center' systems. If you're running a 'variable displacement' pump (like a vane pump), you'll use a 'closed center' system, and when using a 'fixed displacement' pump (a gear or ge...
