Re: And I came home with two dollars
This little 241 runs very strong. It started right up. DSCN0421.JPG It has a very smooth idle and great throttle up response. No smoke at all, even when it first touched off. I did not touch the head or the valves.I ran it for just over a half hour. It's cool to get long dormant stuff going again. D...

Re: And I came home with two dollars
While I'm waiting on parts I'm gonna try getting this blue lump running. When rotated by hand it makes all the right blowing and sucking sounds so it just may have a chance. DSCN0420.JPG The coil, condenser, and spark wire all check out good. New points, push rod, and plug. The carb is rebuilt. The ...

Re: And I came home with two dollars
Today was about getting the front end proper. Clean and tighten up everything. Change out the broken zerk fitting and lubricate.
Changed out the oil in the rear end and on both those engines. Little much else to do at this point without new parts.- Fri Sep 16, 2022 5:40 pm

Re: Ham and CB chatter
Good topic Mike, there's got to be folks here that can chime in here to that! I still have my first base station. It's a 1959 RCA Mk. 9 nine channel. RF output was through one half side of a single 6GH8 tube so it was not exactly a powerhouse, 4 and 1/2 watts peak if I recall. DSCN0416.JPG The mic i...

Re: And I came home with two dollars
The drive shaft is in very nice shape. The rear connector was obliterated. This obviously was from the engine not being bolted down. The front pilot bushing was mutilated too. I replaced the rear connector. When I make these things I like to add provision for a screw in grease fitting. I think it he...

Re: And I came home with two dollars
It's a lovely day outside. Some hot soap and water, white rubbing compound, and wax can go a long way.
Someone did a pretty decent axle bushing repair.
This one did not wander far from home.
And it has half a lighter.- Fri Sep 16, 2022 9:47 am

Re: And I came home with two dollars
A most impressive collection of short wave gear from the golden age of ham for sure there Dave! I am very fond of the old vintage rigs produced by Hallicrafters, Zenith, and Fischer from back in a time when made in USA meant something. Try finding an American made radio today, good luck with that. W...

Re: And I came home with two dollars
The variable BFO control on my entery level S- 120 does exactly what you talking about, it's a really nice feature for such a budget minded rig. I recently had it replaced along with the all other service work that was performed. IMG_7744.JPG I picked up the S-40B because the price was right but rea...

Re: And I came home with two dollars
Thank you again Joe. So this one uses the dual spring, non braking center button then. It was so messed up that I was not clear with what was going on. Re: And I came home with two dollars
The goal is to get it back together and running properly before the foul weather sets in. I have everything on hand to get the clutch and engine back in A#1 condition. Re: And I came home with two dollars
I attempted to remove the carb and the entire engine moved. No bolts in the oil pan at all. Aluminum pan. Someone had laced springs, wire, and blocks of wood as a method of holding the engine in place. Just amazing. DSCN0380.JPG So now's a s good a time as any to rebuild the clutch, I think it needs...

And I came home with two dollars
Went to a local engine show today. Good thing I had a spare Benjamin tucked away, there's never any telling what you can turn up. So this 128 wound up jumping into my Son's trailer, it came along with a solid 42" QA deck. My first wide frame. Help  DSCN0374.JPG Here it is on the ground. This sh...

Re: Cub 70 clutch teaser spring, broke again
The clutch works the same. Given the added .110 stack thickness there will be a fork adjustment needed. That little collar will be under a lot of stress and a high strength alloy is needed to avoid distortion at the face so if your thinking about using aluminum or something like that don't do it. I ...

Re: Cub 70 clutch teaser spring, broke again
The problem is it's about a huge spring smashing against a much smaller one, always has. Lousy design. The matter was resolved in the later series as it should be but that does nothing for a narrow frame machine. I fabricated up a spacer collar that takes away that undue stress on the spring by prev...

Re: Cub 70 clutch teaser spring, broke again
I think that those springs are prone to hooking on the slot of the driven disc. I put a thin 5/8' machine shim between the two before install.

Re: Not what I was expecting
It's a good question Jay and a decision that I did not take without over 20 years thinking about :? While I have never gotten water in the basement water does tend to drain poorly on that side, it runs down off the hill and parks at the first flat place it finds. While on the Eastern side that nearb...

Re: Not what I was expecting
The worst is already over. A strong magnet that I had placed inside years ago did it's job well. No other damage. The shaft stump can live inside the bottom of the axle housing where it will not bother anything. The oil is real clean and I intend to reuse most of it. Not bad for a machine that's alw...

Not what I was expecting
So back at the end of January I was pushing some real heavy wet snow uphill. The machine came to a stop. My expectations were that I had sheared a spirol pin. Well so today I had to get the snow tires off anyway. The left side went Ok.
Then I moved over to the right side. Whoops.

Re: 106 No Charge
I'd begin by ditching your old wire harness and getting a new replacement from Dave or elsewhere. That series has a reputation of the harnesses atomizing into dust after 35 years or so. Folks make repairs on them but to me that is simply not worth the expense, time, or effort. A replacement harness ...

Re: Winter Snow and Storm Pics
My blade fitted 102 looks as though it is going to be down for the duration of the Winter. I'm fairly sure that the spirol pin at the transmission reduction housing end has sheared. The drive shaft and clutch seem to work just fine. Pretty sure that the #5 drive shaft end connection to the input sha...

This will have to do for now.
