My new pulling project

Since I got back into pulling last year with the diesel I decided it was time to dig my old puller out and put it back into service. I built it about 22 years ago and it has been sitting for at least 15. Notice all the dust. It was tucked into the one back corner of my building since the building was built in 2002. My son and I drug it out last fall. The turf tires were just to roll it around. The pulling tires have been used on other tractors for plowing and other ag tire uses.

It started out as a 122. The engine is a 16 with the small flywheel. I made my own dash and added the hood and grill from an 82 series. I wanted an 82 series to start with but they were too new and expensive at the time. Many of the parts were ordered brand new from CCC.
IMG_3836.JPG
When I first built it it didn't have a name and the hood had stripes like an 1811. One time coming home from a pull the hood blew off and got mangled up a bit.
I fixed it up and repainted it and decided to try my hand at air brushing.

I used an upper grille screen from a 482 and cut it out for the rectangular headlights from a then-current lawn tractor (1720 or 1015 etc) for a custom look.

It looked a lot better after a wash job.

Then I tore it all apart. It is being rebuilt as an 82 series. I have been thinking about this project for several years and gathering parts. Here I'm starting to mock it up with the new frame.

I'll be pulling the class they call 16-20hp stock. It runs 26-12x12 tires and a 4000 rpm limit.

More to come as it progresses.

I put that on it back when I built it and I was young and dumb. It is ungodly loud! But now I see Super Cub is running megaphones on some of theirs. They say they have seen improvement on the dyno with certain engine combinations. If nothing else it gives it a distinctive sound.

I doubt if anyone noticed in the pics but I used the NF front axle. I wasn't sure if it would work. I had to shorten the steering arm and the drag link. It is a bit lighter than the WF/82 series axle.

I noticed the pipe right away. I have been running a megaphone pipe for a while now.

Well my first pull with this tractor a few weeks ago was pretty dismal at best. I pulled twice and finished 11th and 12th. Well I had another pull yesterday and did quite a bit better. In the 1000lb class I got a full pull and was the only one to do so and won the class. In the second class two of us got full pulls and we had a pull off. The lady had me by 5 feet or so but lost a weight when she stopped. So she got disqualified for the pull off and ended up second. So I got two first places. Then I won $27 in a 50/50 drawing so it was a pretty lucky day! I'll post some videos later.

I believe I'd have let the lady keep the first , especially if she lost the weight after she'd stopped , but thats me ...

Those tires were an old set that had never been used. I was lucky enough to buy them from someone who no longer was able to use them due to sponsership
from another tire company. The wheels are 4/8 offset.

I just heard the other day that Millers have the new ones out but they are a very soft rubber compound (like the 10.50s) and probably won't work very well for pulling. I was also told that the next batch should be of a harder compound that will be better for pulling.

Todd I worked at a tire plant for 16 years. I drove 50 mile round trip to work.
When purchasing light truck tires I always bought a good mud and snow tire for the back. ( 2 WD

They lessened up the cure time by almost 12 min on the presses to get better production rates. Didn't hurt the tire as far as safety, even gave a better ride. Problem was it also lessened the mileage you could get with the originals.

I used to buy them and put them in a pot like they use for recapping only no mold for tread or bladder just pure steam. I would " cook" them for 20 min and the mileage was unreal got better than 2 years+ all my other running around. Bad thing was it took away the quality of the ride.Every tar line sounded like you was riding in an old Dodge Dart.

To get to the point, Couldn't the softer tires be recooked like at a recap shop ? I think they can set then from 10 Minutes and increments of 1 after that .

Jim,
A buddy of mine talked to Russ Nichols who is a puller who also cuts and hardens pulling tires. He said the particular compound used for those new tires does not lend itself to being hardened. Apparently he has already tried hardening them with poor results.

Is that the owner of nichols tire over here in ohio? If so I will have to check into that. I guy I work with runs a hot farm tractor and last year redone it and brought it out this year as a division 5 tractor. He was telling me about nichols tire. He said the guy treated him really well and helped him sell his pro puller tires and got him a set of firestones and cut them for him

You need to get ahold of Robert Nichols. He's the tire cutter. I've had Him do a couple sets for us now and he does a real nice job. He's very knowledgeable about tires and has gained a big following with the big tractors as well as the trucks and GT's.
Some rubber just don't harden well. When Julian started with the
lawntecs he sent several samples up to us to take to a local tire cutter and a guy in our area that does hardening to get opinions of which rubber would be best. they were pretty good about checking the samples out which made a big difference in the tire. the rest was just figuring out how many lugs He wanted, angle, depth and how much rubber you wanted over the carcas. how stiff the side walls should be and what the face should work like. one thing I'll say for the Edge tires . they are very light. lightest of all of them. the heaviest are the VM's. If you ever decide to harden a set of lawntecs. leave the valve stem cores out. if you leave air in them they grow about 3 inchs, you can always streach them back to size. they will shrink some.. Cepeks will hold at their size if you leave air in them. and you can streach them or shrink them if you want.

Brandon,

They are Vogel VM09s on the diesel. I also have a set of the new Lawntecs but I haven't tried them yet.
