Who built the super gear drive
Ok now Im might be changing my mind and want to build the 1872 into a gear drive and run a pump to run the hyd lift and steering.
I remember someone here did it and they sold it on Epay. If anyone knows who it is, was, could you please let me know. I wanna talk with them befor I commit to this idea.
TIA

Re: Who built the super gear drive
It wasn't a super but was 82 series very neatly done, I was told they thought it was Scott Murphy, doesn't seem to be a site member here. I want to do this but don't know much about hydraulics, pump size, pressure output reguired and other things needed even have a tractor to play with already put a three speed in frame. But it looks like it will not have hydrualics if I complete now.

I have an idea how to do it, but I remember he had the pump driven off the fly wheel, I think. It was on ebay tast fall and Joe Allen and I were at a plow day talking about it. Im picking up an extra rear out of a 126 to do it with. I dont know what Id need pump size to make it work. I would imagine not much. As far as the hydro goes, just some soft lines from the pump to the steering is all you would need. If I remember right the main line went into the valve by the steering, or the steering its self.
Imagine the gear drive in the super and an over drive in it, WOW bad ass!

If I remember right he made a special part tp put on flywheel with a pulley made on it. I have a aluminum creeper I'm going to use in mine. Are you sure about a overdrive that would make it faster and you will already gain some speed by the larger tires, I was thinking about a 10% underdrive setup to bring to speed back closer to normal.

Re: Who built the super gear drive
An automotive power steering pump would provide plenty of flow and pressure to run the hydraulics. One from an older import with a v-belt drive would turn the correct direction. I had figured one from a Honda would work the best.

do you think I would be able to run it off the back of the fly wheel using a command eng?
You know I dont know how to make things like some of you guys do.

Re: Who built the super gear drive
You can if you can find room for the pump...I've been holding off on adding hydraulic lift to my 582 w/ Command because I don't have a pump that will fit and be able to be driven off the pulley I put on the flywheel end of the crank. I'm probably going to have to come up with some sort of shaft extension for whatever pump I decide to use. When you get a pump, try to get one that matches the specs of the charge pump on the hydro, and if it doesn't have a relief valve, you'll need one of those, too.

You have a 582 with the command in it? Ill have to go and look at your pics.

I say your pics, did you make the coupler for the clutch to the fly wheel ?
I guess I really need to learn how to use a lathe, then Ill need to buy one!

I dont know who built the super gear drive but I know who has the SUPER "O"!
Price of tires - ?
Price of the 18" wide wheels - ?
Does a Kohler 7 horse have enough power to spin the tires - ?
The look of the your friends when you pop a wheelie and you land on your head - PRICELESS.
Please excuse the g***n primer
(Sorry if this gets us off the topic of the super gear drive, you can blme post this on Vinces moonshine!!!!!)

Scott nice job looks good . Now how about some details on the pump output , what is the valve bolted to the battery box , line sizes , were did you buy the parts maybe some part numbers ?

At one point I had all the info posted somewhere but I can't find it now. The pump is similar to the one listed above but I got it off ebay and it was designed for a specific purpose, I had the pdf but..... IIRC 4-7 gpm @ 2200psi @ 3300 rpm, CCW only.
Two things I looked for was a directional only pump and I wanted it to be coupler driven and not pulley driven. I don't really trust the multi-directional multi-drive pumps.
The relief valve was bought from one of the surplus sites that has been refered to here.....can't remember.......adjustable from 500psi to 1500 psi. It's easy to adjust and it's quiet, cost about $55.
The most difficult part was bending and flaring the 3/8 tubing, time consuming. I have a local hydraulic shop that supplied the fittings and tubing and hose. IIRC the suction hose is 5/8 and the elbows are plastic barbed heater hose fittings.
The remote oil filter adaptor is from NAPA and was suprisingly $60.
The Lovejoy cage is from TS and was about $35.
The shaft size was .625 or 9/16 and was a bit of a pain to find the coupling for, had to have a machine shop order it for me. The drive shaft itself is 5/8 hydraulic ram.
I'll have to look to see if I have the bearing numbers...metric...... one thing I learned and I'll post a pic on this below, is to knurl the shaft and tube to a press fit.

Re: Who built the super gear drive
My first time around I used cheap 1 3/8 X 5/8 flange bearings but I did not knurl the shaft and it's didn't take long to spin it out. The replacement brearing are high quality and expensive but not flanged so I used a piece of pvc the I cut a slit in so that I could compress it and slide it into the shaft tube to use as a brearing stop.
The spacer is a 1/2 brass nipple cut to size.
I originally used a cheap 2.75 X 5/8 pulley from TS but when I but the new bearings in I went to a 3.00 adustable cast pulley. The thinking was that I could use the adjustment to create a second means of keeping the belt tight.......that didn't work as there was not room for the hub. I simply adjusted it all the way in and cut the hub off and then welded it up. The cast pulley is the way to go as it holds the belt better and won't glaze over and cause slippage.

Re: Who built the super gear drive
I wish I could afford to do another one, an actuall Super next time.
This one is my mower and has worked flawlessly through last season. I mow 1.5 acres here and 6 acres elsewhere so it realy got some use.
The standard tranny is more natural to me and I prefer it over the hydro. It's much more speed constant up and down hills and the power to the ground (traction) seems vastly impoved over the 1811 I used to use.

Re: Who built the super gear drive
Im with you, I dont like the hydros. For me 2nd gear about 2/3 throtal and Ill mow al day.
This may be a lot over my head, and go with the pto driven like on the loader 129 I have. Im still thinking of doing the hydro lift on the 582's. I dont use the ptos on them, and use the 782 dash and rock shaft to lift the plow.
Ill have to print this thread and keep it for later this winter. THANK you for the help!

Re: Who built the super gear drive
Vince, you need to be mowing at full throttle or you'll overheat the engine. Air-cooled engines like these need to be run at full throttle under load so they cool properly.
