Very cool! Do you have any pictures with the fender pan and tunnel cover off? That would be a great upgrade to any 582.

Thank you,
Mike

Dave I took a lot of pictures during the build . Basically if the part is painted yellow its a changed part . Out with the creeper and spring assist to make room for the pump and filter .
More pictures in a little bit . :D

My new to me metal lathe came in handy . In fact the first part I made with it was for this project . I had to turn the center of the pulley large enough so that it would fit snugly over the transmission input shaft coupling . I wanted to put the belt tension side load on the transmission input shaft and not on the driveshaft . With the limited room both pulleys had to small in diameter to fit and still allow some belt tension adjustment . The pump is rated at 3000 PSI and 3600 RPM and the pump pulley is slightly larger than the input shaft pulley so I don't have to worry about overspeeding the pump . The pump suction line also has a large oddball fine thread input fitting which I had to reduce slightly to match the oil filter output fitting and hose size I was using .

I found a cheap JD dual spool valve that's very similar to the cub dual spools , I just hope the 582 doesn't reject the JD part .

I have a OCD condition that prevents me from drilling , cutting or welding on a perfectly good cub and I wanted everything to be bolt in that could be removed if I wanted in the future .
The 582 had a near perfect International dash panel that I just couldn't bring myself to cut a hydro handle square hole into . So I found a cheap ebay 482 dash panel that a PO had drilled a headlight switch hole into . It was perfect for my project even with the hole because that's exactly where the hydro handles are located . The last picture is the same dash after cutting out the gauge and handle holes and some cleanup and using a silver paint marker to touchup the lettering .

I changed the gear drive rearend coverplate to a hydro coverplate which has a higher fill hole which increases the fluid level since I'm using the rearend as the hydraulic fluid reservoir . I used the rearends bottom drain hole for the sump line that runs to a MTD 990 oil filter assy. and that mounts to the unused creeper holes . There is another plug on the left side of the 582 rearend that I removed and used for the hydraulic fluid return line . I also took out the 582 rockshaft and installed a 782 rockshaft as well as using a 782 cylinder and cylinder mounting bracket . I used a stock gear drive driveshaft that I had on the shelf and have no clue what its out of , but the length was perfect for this project . I used a couple of 5/8' locking collars that pullers use to adjust the clutch spring tension and they saved me from having to drill a spiral pin hole .

Since theres a lot of moving parts in a confined area , I tried to use hardlines where I could , but there is also some hydraulic rubber lines in places where hardlines were impossible to install . I didn't take any pictures of the sump line or return line , but I can take some if someone needs them .

I also have a short video of this working on my Facebook page , but I don't know how to put it on here .

Jess awesome job! I have been wanting to put hydraulics in a 582 forever, but don't have the know how or tools to do a set up like that. Probably the nicest 582 set up I've seen. Since you used a 782 pump and rockshaft, I'm guessing you could use a cat 0 hitch on it too, couldn't you?

Steve , I don't see why you couldn't put a Cat 0 on it . That's the great thing about the 82 series frames and consoles , they are all the same as far as mounting holes . The 582 has all the holes that the 782 does for the cylinder bracket mounts , and the spool valve and hydro handles are all bolt on just like the 782 . The hardest thing I ran into was getting the rusty 582 rockshaft out to put the 782 rockshaft in . After a couple of days of soaking with PB and hammering on it , I ended up cutting it out . I got the spiral pins out OK , but the deck lift brackets were firmly rusted to the shaft . :banghead:

Wow....wow! U r the master "cobbler". Great job on making it fit and using lots of stock parts and pieces. I have used the silver paint pen on the dash panels.....but yours looks better than mine. I found I could only go over it one time or it would rub off the previous coat. Sweet pics Jess!

Thank you for all the pictures and the great write up. I have also considered doing something like this on my 582, but your set up looks like how IH would have done it from the factory.

Thanks,
Mike

Thanks guys , I really appreciate the comments . I plan on taking the 582 to Ohio PD at the end of this month for further testing .
I still have a few little things I need to tweak , namely adjusting the pressure down a tad coming from the pump , It doesn't need 3000 PSI and I think the hydrolift cubs ran 1200 PSI max , and I'm afraid of busting a line if I leave it set at 3000 . I also forgot to mention the pump that I'm using is a Concentric Rockford 2 stage gear pump rated at 3000 PSI 11 GPM @ 3600 RPM and clockwise rotation . When I shot the video the cub was running about half throttle and the cylinder was plenty fast at that speed .
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

Re: 582-H2

OK , I feel its time for a update on my 582 hydraulic lift project and some of the issues I've had to overcome since my last post . Also to warn anyone that might have similar ideals of putting hydraulics on a 582 or similar gear drive cub , as there could be some dangers involved . I have no background in hydraulics although a lot of the same principals apply in air conditioning and the military grade 5000 PSI air compressors which I did for over 16 years before working on the railroad , so I do have a rudimentary knowledge of high pressure units and pressure regulators . In other words , I know just enough to be dangerous ....LOL

When I purchased my new hydraulic pump it came with no parts breakdown or instructions , so I got on the internet and searched for info on this pump . I knew it had a built in pressure regulator , but quickly learned that no matter how much I adjusted it that I couldn't get the pressure below 3000 PSI . While trying to lower the pressure I eventually thru trial and error smoked one belt , separated one cub lift cylinder and burst on old used rubber hydraulic hose that I had planned on changing anyway,. All that before I finally figured out what was going on .

This pump is a gear drive two stage pump , and the pressure regulator is only for the first stage and is factory preset for 600 PSI . First stage is high flow but low pressure , after the pump pressure raises to the preset 600 PSI then the second stage kicks in , and it is high pressure but low flow .
I could lower the first stage pressure and it would slow the rate it filled the cylinder ,but when the cylinder reached the end of its stroke, and the pressure raised to 600 PSI that's when the second stage would kick in and almost immediately go to 3000 PSI on my 4000 PSI gauge .

After doing some research I found that there is a spring and check ball that connects first and second stage and if removed disables the second stage of the pump . With second stage disabled I can then use the first stage regulator to control the pumps output pressure . Like I said the pump first stage is factory preset at 600 PSI but is adjustable from 200 to 900 PSI .

I made a statement in one of my previous post that was in error when I stated that from memory I thought the cub hydro implement lift pressure was set at 1200 PSI max , its actually set at 625 PSI max .

Anyway with the 582 running I learned that setting this pump at 500 PSI it easily lifts a 10 inch brinly plow with a 25 lb cub wheel weight hanging off the end of it . Why the added wheel weight ?? I was trying to simulate lifting the plow while still in the furrow . Also , with the pressure set down to 500 PSI there is no change in the engines pitch and no smoking belt when the cylinder reaches the end of it stroke .... :D
I replaced the smoked belt with a better quality Gates belt and so far so good .

The only thing that I haven't covered yet is how much heat this hydraulic setup might make . I know some hydraulic systems need a oil cooler to dissipate excess heat . I've only had the 582 running in short cycles so far , but now that I've got the pressure down where I want it , I'm going to work it hard . I don't think with the 2 gallons of hydraulic fluid and cast iron rearend that there's going to be a heat issue , but if there is I'll update everybody .

Its getting close to being Tommie proof .
