The 100 reincarnation

It was five years ago when I parked the 100 under the deck and covered it up with a tarp. Since then it has languished under the deck awaiting it's day. It ran well the day I parked it there and it will run well again when I drive it out of there soon enough. As a backstory I should mention that I bought this Cub on the day after Thanksgiving 1984.
Over the years the little 100 has worn many hats, it's last life was as a stock class pulling tractor for about eight years. Before that it served as firewood hauler. As time goes by things change and this is to become my Granddaughter's little put put tractor.
I started tear down Friday. Gone are the heavy clutch, 26 inch Firestone's, rear weight brackets, wheelie bars, and breakaway kill switch.
The photo shows roughly where I'm at right now with it. But the look can deceive, the frame is in good shape, the steering box is tight, and the rear transaxle is packed with all the good stuff inside and is staying.

I don't know why I'm bedeviled by these things, last Winter I installed one upside down in the snow and mud and Friday I snapped this one. When I saw Joe at Zagray last Saturday and told him about it he gave me one of those what the hell did you do that for looks and I knew straight away he was spot on right :oops:

Anyway, he was nice enough to let me rummage around in the scrap heap where I found another. Disaster averted ;)

With the engine out I can make my decision with which way I'm heading. The engine in the foreground is the puller engine. It has about something like 40 hooks on it. But I'm not using that for what the machine is to become as I'm pretty sure one of the valve tappets is not rotating correctly and it needs to be gone through again. Also there's evidence of rodent tenants at the head. It's way too much engine (and money) for a kid in the first place. Rather, I'm planning on going with the 12Hp replacement engine toward the rear of the photo. It does have a slight puff of smoke at startup but I happen to know it's in good shape inside and that the balance gears are removed. Also the PTO clutch is like new.

Here is the clutch torn down. I'm glad to see that heavy spring go, it's murder on the foot and throwout bearing is roached. New parts are heading my way. The drive shaft has almost no wear but then I did make it out of 718 Inconel.

And I do have that pesky little clutch pedal yoke back where it belongs not even upside down, I think :roll:

So now it's pretty much a matter of delivery trucks showing up. I'm changing out the wire harness as well. In the meantime it's about cleaning and staging parts for reassembly.

While I'm waiting on clutch and electrical parts to show up it's time to turn my attention to other things.
The seat pan was in need of paint and I scuffed it with some sand paper and gave it a coat of Rust-Oleum almond spray paint. The starter generator while freshly rebuilt got a quick coat of CaseIH Iron Gard federal yellow. The stock air cleaner is going to be reinstalled. Since a 100 will not accept the larger gas tank I'm putting the smaller one back on. I converted it to the internal filter arrangement, those glass bowls vibrate and are tough on the gas tanks.

The replacement engine is ready to go in. It was given a new head gasket and the gas tank mount bracket has been changed over to the small style.

Here's the deck that will be going on, it's a real nice 42" three piece with a recent rebuild of the spindles. It has new genuine IH blades on it too. I went through all the mule drive pulleys and found the two best ones. They have years of service left in them.

While it ran well when I parked it that may need work, I'm unsure. That said I did disconnect the fuel line and run the machine out of gasoline before covering it up.

Damn the torpedo's full steam ahead! :lol:

I got to thinking what am I stepping around all these wheel weights for and how about mounting a pair on the inside of those 25" ATV tires?

With them and the 52 pound Bolens weights on the outside that will make 78 pounds per side.
While I had the wheels off I tossed a brushed on coat of yellow 483B left over from a previous project for the inside of the fenders just to add some extra rust protection, nothing fancy- this is about preserving the metal.

Cool project! Your gonna give the granddaughter a mower? Your gonna ask her to work while she visits..... :roll:

It was a good day. The 100 is now a fully renovated roller with the replacement engine, new clutch, and new wire harness yet to be installed.

Well, I drove it under the deck 5 years ago and I swore I meant what I said about driving it out of there.
And today I did.

Still need to install the new wire harness, get the lights working, retorque the head, mount the mule drive, deck carriage, deck, and mount the hood.
Hoping to have that stuff out of the way by tomorrow Afternoon.

Although I still need to relocate the headlight switch and set the toe in. The replacement engine runs very strong.
Rather than modify a brand new wire harness to accept an amp meter I've changed over to a voltage gauge which is much easier to install.
I like it better anyway. ;)

I need the correct headlight switch for another project so the after market replacement is going to be moved over to the volt gauge. The indicator light is going to be wired in to show when they are on.

With spare parts on hand to do the build only the essentials were purchased so the entire project came in at well under $300.
