How many IH 82 Series Cub Cadet 982 were built?

Post by genep »

Introduced in 1979, the 82 Series red IH-built Cub Cadet tractors were built until 6/1981. A book shows serial number listings like this:
7/80 - 6/81 665001 - 70000 (sold to MTD in 1981) Based on that how can one determine how many 982 tractors were built? There had to be more than 3500 built.

Gene , my maths not to good but I believe thats 35,000 .
Acording to the monthly production report that was supplied so kindly by Paul Bell , the last 982 built was serial number 688712 .
On the old site we used to have a chart that told how many of each model of IH cubs were built , I can't remember if it included the 82 series or not , but I haven't seen it on here yet .
Maybe someone knows more about it .

Those serial # lists are for ALL the 82 series Cub Cadets (not including Cadets). So all that tells you is that there were 35,000 82 series tractors built by IH. That would include 482, 582, 682, 782, and 982. I have never seen any serial number records that break them down by individual model. CCC may have those records but I have never seen any published. Hank's book mentions that there were 4,005 169s built but he doesn't have that info for most of the other models.
If one assumed that there were an equal number of each model built that would be around 7000 for each. I'm sure that is not the case based on how many I remember our dealership selling and how many you see surviving today. I would say that the 682 and 782 were the most popular followed by the 582 then the 982 and the 482 was probably the least popular. If I had to make a S.W.A.G., I would say probably around 11,00 each for the 682 and 782, maybe 9,000 for the 582, 3,000 for the 982 and 2,000 for the 482. This whole thing is only for the IH built tractors. There were way more of most of the models built by CCC.

Of course I could be all wrong too :D

Dan , I guess it would depend on wether they started with 665001 being the first 82 built and 700,000 being the last , my math says 35,000......... but hey I flunked Algebra too

Well Jess, I guess I was feeling good about my math until three minutes ago. I guess this could explain my life long quest to be a peasant.

You would think there would have to be more than 4005 of each model built or everyone would be talking about how there was less of that model than the 169... or 23xx or so 800's built? But if you include MTD built units, that's a whole different story altoghether.
Does a model breakdown serial number list exist? If so, I'd love to see it too.
From the first Original to the last x82 Series... you can't beat an IH Cub Cadet!!!

And your Algebra isn't bad, you just don't have the right variables to deduce an adequate computation ;)

Paul B's listed a serial number breakdown for certain models. I don't know if he has the 82 series list or not. IIRC the lowest production was the model 800, then 169, 126, 73, 86, 72, .........................
Cubs in the den: 882 Diesel, 1512 Diesel, 1772 SGT Diesel..............I've got a smokin' problem

I would think the IH 982 would be close to one of the least made out of the 82 series. I think the demand for something like the 682/782 was greater but that's just a hunch.

I agree with your assessment of the 82 Series sales. Not everyone would want to pay the price of the 982 tractors or had a need for something that big. In my opinion the least sold may have been the 582 Special. I had one and sold it fast. That Peerless rear end with its right angle drive and belt was geared soooooo slow that high gear was about the same as second in any other gear drive CC. It was probably great for tilling or snow blower work.
