Re: Got started on the 149
Scott,
If it were me I would still make the mule drive bolt on. That way if you plow with it you don't have to worry about rocks hitting the pulleys and bending them. That along with whatever other mischeif you might get into with it
I think instead of a bigger muffler you could add a second engine.

Would you?

Back to the subject of removing the foot rest plate screws, where do you find replacement screws! I got all mine successfully out except for one that I had to drill out. They don't have those big headed screws at the Ace Hardware.
Thanks,
Steve Woods

Steve,
I just use a regular 1/4 x 20 bolt, stainless if I want it to stay clean.
I like the bolt head look better but I'm sure someone can tell you where to find the machine screws for it.

Mcmaster-Carr has them also. Even have them in stainless steel. They are call "truss head" screws. They are either 5/16x3/4 or 5/16x1.

Here's what they look like.
McMaster-Carr #91785A581 5/16- 18NC x 3/4 lg. 18-8 stainless steel.
I really like them, they make removal a breeze years later on

Truss head screws! Thank you so much for that information. I'll be placing an order with McMaster Carr soon.

Re: Got started on the 149
Well, the stretch frame for the 149 is still standing up in the shop and hasn't moved.....
I needed to get the grass cut and was going to fire up the 149 BUT, figured if I did, I'd never get it tore down to make the conversion.
So I pulled the front blade off the new 782 (only got to do some good plowing once this winter!!) and put the 50" deck on it.
Got all the grass cut and the deck belt broke when I headed out to the field. Got the yard all done though.
Had to sweep the yard cause it got a little high.... in March! My rock wall wintered out nice, gotta love loaders. Cleaned the deck up and took the belt cover off. Wonder why the belt broke? I guess it didn't like sitting in the same position all winter then having to work all day.
I think I'll leave the cover off, I'm not real fond of all the moisture and crap that collects under them.

Re: Got started on the 149
Cultivated the neighbors garden yesterday with the 149 and broke a tine.
I was trying to tear out a stump that's been in his garden for years, I eventually got it out! I figured I had nothing to loose trying to weld it (and getting it to hold). I ground it to a point on both ends and filled it with weld. So far so good. I dressed up the front where I pulled the bushes out last summer and got some roots and rocks out.

Re: Got started on the 149
Oh, a reminder.
It's not a bad idea to check bolts for tightness every now and then.
If I didn't see this fly across the yard while I was cutting the grass it would be long lost.
The nick the blade put in it kinda acts a a thread locker....
