k301/k321 spark plug location

Post by MattS »

I was looking at the difference in a 12hp and 14hp engine and noticed the spark plug on the 14hp is in a different spot than the 12. Does anyone know why Kohler did that? The heads take the same gasket, so are the heads interchangeable?

Matt,
I don't think the difference is from the engine size. I think you are dealing two different vintages of heads. The early heads have the plug centered between the valves while the later ones have it over the exhaust valve. They are interchangable as long as you have the matching top baffle. The later style is supposed to make a bit more power and burn fuel more efficiantly.

Matt S.

There is a 3rd head that may fit on K301/K321 Kohlers.
spark plug over exhaust valve:

sparkplug between the valves:

high compression head-sometimes called LP head:

All the heads use the same head gasket.
