Rock Shaft removal

Post by vince_o »

Guys I need to get the rock shaft out of the 1872. Seems the P/O put a bolt in it and bent it. So I got it unwedged, is this a word, and I want to pull the rock shaft out so I can bend it back straight to put my rear lift on. In the parts break down I only found the 2 roll pins, but cant seem to budge it. Heated it till it was red, a few times. Im letting it soak over night.

Dave

I used heat from 730 last night till about 3 today. 2 cans of PB, A TON of busted nuckles, one broken sledge hammer and I threw things cussed swore Ill NEVER buy another POS tractor again, espically one that was under water! At one point my hands hurt so bad I couldnt feel them gripping the handle of the hammers.

But its out. I straightened it, didnt take a pic of it yet, now need to build it back up unless someone has one they will sell me real cheap. This 1872 Im going to name the money pit. As much as I have in this I could have bought one up north and drove to get it and still had money left over. :banghead:

Vince...Vince...Vince... you don't know stuck rockshafts ....
I've found if you have a big enough hammer you can free anything .. :o
The 782 rustbucket rockshaft wouldn't even rotate in the frame , much less come apart after removing the roll pins ( which was the easy part ) .
No paint just solid rust .
I've done a few and usually start presoaking them in PB and liquid wrench about a week before I even try to take them apart .
I have found a BFH , prybar , and flamewrench works miracles .
This is the cub that the previous owner used to tow a salt spreader for his driveway .
It still took me the better part of 3 hours to get it apart .
Didn't break anything except a sweat ... ;)

That tractor must have been used to spread salt or something!

I parted an 1862 a few years ago. I wanted the rockshaft out for a spare for my 782. It has the early style and I like the later style better.
I heated the whole rockshaft bright orange with the torch and still couldn't get it apart. The frame was junk anyway so I cut it in half with the torch.
I later welded the frame back together to use for a mockup when I built my diesel puller.

Todd

I see no half mule in that pic, LOL Ive always enjoyed watching your builds.

What amazes me is how the thinest amount of rust can hold something so tight.. The oxadation prosis is just crazy to hold back a huge press or such heat.

Vince,
I would consider adding some extra material to that arm. We did on my Dad's 2072 but didn't take any photos.

Vince,

For what its worth here is a picture of the rockshaft from my 882 shows that arm has a bit of a "kick" or offset to it about 1/2 inch give or take.

Todd I was thinking of doing that, but I dont see why if Im not going to use it. I thought the lift bar would hook there but Randy told me it hooks up with the pins by the cylinder.

Or am I missing something?

Is that piece different on an super than a regular GT? I know the outside lift arm is different? If it's not I am gonna part some GT's Vince, I can send you a rockshaft.

I keep looking at the one on my 2072 and it dosnt look like the one Dave has shown. I looked last night how to hook the lift bar. Dosnt show the pin hooking into the piece I straightened. What Im wondering is why do they have a nut welded into that piece that hooks to the cylinder. Thats where the PO had the long bolt that bent everything.

BB give me a call sometime this week in the am I need a few things for Dannys 482

I'm thinking the bolt was in there as a makeshift lockout. When that shaft is in there properly it floats. Not pinned to the hydraulics in any way. If you had a Super the threaded hole is use to bolt the attachment block for the rear three point in place. On the GT it isn't used. On the GT the rear lift bar connect to the side of the clevis in the counter-bored hole shown in your picture. Oh you should have the dogleg bend in the ear as well.

Vince,
If you aren't going to use it with a front blade it probably won't matter. That big heavy blade (or blower) is what bends them. The 3 pt lift bar hooks to the J shaped piece.

super rockshafts are not the same as gt rockshafts the super rockshaft has a wider hooked part and on the 1872 2072 they have a arm that comes down the inside of the frame which is for the blade or blower gt and later supers dont have that arm and the real late supers and gt use bearings instead of bushings in the frame
Vinny I have those rockshafts here for about 20.00
