In need of advice
I have a IH 982. When I bought it it came with a seriously blown motor. I put in a kohler 18 magnum. So in my eyes the tractor is already tainted. I have the chance to buy a 3 cyl kabota diesel. I would love to drop that into the 982. Seeing that the tractor is not original anyways would it hurt the collector value even more if I put a diesel in it but left the decals original?

A correctly installed kabota diesel in any cub will only help the value in my opinion. Diesels are uncommon and hard to find and sought after. You'd essentially have a 1572 or 1772 cub that's red.
From the first Original to the last x82 Series... you can't beat an IH Cub Cadet!!!

Re: In need of advice
Our main goal is to have at least one of every 82 series cub. My son is worried that if I put the diesel in the 982 it won't count towards the collection even tho it has the IH serial tag and numbers. Anyones thoughts?

Re: In need of advice
First off, it is your tractor, put whatever you want in it.
From a collectors point of view, if the tractor is not as it was built, it is no longer that model and the value to that collector would be less in my opinion. From a users and not a collectors point of view, you made a 982 with a blown engine a using tractor by replacing the engine with the Mag 18, basically making it "red" version of a CCC/MTD built 1872. Put a diesel in it and you wii have made it a red clone of a CCC/MTD built 1572 or 1772. It is no longer a 982, and it is really not a 1572/1772, but it could have an appeal to users that like diesels. The decals alone don't make the the tractor a 982. Just my opinion, and like other things, everyone has one.

Re: In need of advice
Well said Paul.
First off, a collection only has worth if you are willing to sell it. If you plan on keeping things forever, don't even worry about value. It also depends on what you want to do with it. In my opinion, diesels shouldn't be show queens. So if it will be a working tractor, you will certainly come to appreciate the diesel. If it will be a show queen, I say leave the Kohler in it and keep an eye out for a rebuildable Onan to make it original.
I think if you were to resell it, it is worth more as a running tractor than one with a blown engine.
As far as value with the diesel if you went to sell it,
it depends on how good of an installation job you do. If you do everything right and make a clean, factory looking installation, it should be worth as much as a 1572 in the same condition.
