Wheel Removal 1811

Post by ReicheP »

I need to remove the wheel on my 1811 and the wheel/inner bearing race is stuck on the axle.

Any suggestions for removal?

PB blaster, and work it with a hammer and punch to get it loose.

I don't know how you would work a punch in there. Maybe I would try threading the bolt back on to the axle then use a plastic hammer to hit the bolt. If there is enough of a rim on the outside bearing you could get that off to get to the inside bearing. Or deflate tire and use a block of wood against inside of wheel and a hammer. Just guessing here, never have run into this. Good luck. Lance

The wheel was being removed so I could free up the steering knuckle which wasn't taking grease. The bolt holding the knuckle onto the axle was frozen in place and with the wheel still on it was difficult to loosen, etc. Air chisel was used to loosen the bolt which just slid up and out past the wheel rim. So the knuckle is off and the wheel is still attached to the knuckle.

Gonna play with it today, but a friend has a press at work that should help remove the wheel from the axle.

At least with the assembly off the tractor you have some room to work. Just don't mess up your spindle, I think they are pricey. Have a good 1! Lance

Let the air out, set the wheel on two blocks, big drift and nice sledge did the job.

Agree! All done and back on the ground. It's amazing how easy it is to turn the wheels when there is a bIt of grease available!

BTDT many a times.... :)

Yes BFH are handy and it is amazing how much better these steer when they have been all taken apart, cleaned, and put back together with grease.

Adding to this old discussion for future reference.

I had to remove the other front wheel and is was frozen in place too. Since I was working out side in the winter here is how the wheel was easily removed.

Tractor was jacked up, wheel turned to the other side and using a 6' Long digging pry bar and a few well placed impacts on the inside of the wheel from the other side of the tractor persuaded the wheel off. Axle cleaned and another wheel installed with a bit of white grease for good measure.

That's why we do preventable maintance in the summer. It's warmer. LOL. next time try to use a propane torch to heat the knuckle/grease/ zerk fitting up and try greasing it. Works most of the time.

Heat was the first thing I tied to loosen up the knuckle. This was one of those years where I didn't have one day off.

What we do to remove the wheel from the spindle is use a pickle fork hitting on the wheel center with the pickle fork and most times with a few good placed hits they are off
