Posting this in case it helps anyone with an old UD-6 creeper. When I got the unit it popped out of gear as many do. When I opened it up I could see that the lower shaft was moving side to side which kept the top and bottom gears from fully meshing. After removing the expansion plugs I could see that the snap ring on one end of the lower shaft had popped off. The missing ring allowed the shaft to move from side to side causing the popping problem. New snap ring, new expansion plugs (1 5/8 in. OD) and she's good to go. Hope this helps someone.
