Is it worth Saving
Is it worth Saving
Picked this up yesterday and trying to decide if it's worth saving, it's a 61' O that's in pretty rough condition but he basically gave it to me. I had traded him an old Wheelhorse for the fenders which actually came off of this O and he had a creeper and air filter that he was lets just say "proud of". Anyway comments / opinions welcome. Oh yeah, I do have later model "donor" O that would have many of the parts needed to complete this one, if I recall it's a 63'. (Pics up in a few iPad not letting me post)

Re: Is it worth Saving
That frame has the creeper hole and my 61 made in Dec. didn't have the creeper hole. What do you think that SN is? it looks like 1 868 1
which is Nov. 61. I just looked at the creeper hole and that one was put in after it went to a dealer. I have seen very few creeper holes that weren't butchered by the installers. The hood, Pedestal(if it isn't rotted on the bottom and don't have the slot in it) and grill look to be worth saving.

Since you already have a donor tractor, I was say it's definitely worth saving! Looks to be pretty solid, what you already have there...

Dad and I have started with lots worse!
At this point, It's easier to find a pile of parts and build an O, I don't see too many clean unmolested ones for sale in my area.

Can you buy WD40 by the tank car?
Re: Is it worth Saving
Yep, AW I know what you mean. The chances of finding an O in any condition down here is slim and none. I think I have enough parts to get it started back to life. I just wish I had got it before the PO decided to part it since it had the creeper and all on it. He's still got the creeper and oil bath air cleaner, he's asking $200 for those. I've got the correct rims to go on it and a motor that will need rebuilding and the tower will need replacing but I think the tower on the other is ok but the other is a 63 so there may be some minor differences there. I have a solid good running unrestored 62 that I was gonna put the fenders on but may put them back on the 61 since that's where they came from and the 61 would have a little more historical significance to it than the 62.
Looks like a long way to go on it, maybe it will stop snowing hahaha down here and I can start getting it inside to work on. The weather guessers are saying anywhere from a dusting to 4" tonight which will mean we will have to put up closed signs at the borders of the state and run to the grocery stores and clean the shelves of milk and bread!

Oh yeah Geezer, serial number is 18984 so I'm guessing mid to late 61' model.

I would go buy the creeper and oil bath. You wont find it any cheaper.
Here's what mine started with. They where easy to find back then but parts where hard to find. 10 years ago. Here's what it ended up like. Not great paint job (1st for me)

Re: Is it worth Saving
Update, turns out the parts tractor's are both1961's. Probably built within a few weeks of each other. The one pictured above is 18984 serial number and the other is 19449. At least it will be a good start on building a 61 Original. Now if I could get the old guy with the two sitting in his shed rusting away to dust just a few miles north of me to turn loose of those I would be set on parts! (One of those has fenders)

Tim, you know he won't let them go because he is going to "fix em up one of these days"
Re: Is it worth Saving
LOL His exact words! Had a guy tell me that about a couple of old B JD's one time about 15 or 20 yrs ago. Went by there the other day and happened to look over that way and there's not a whole lot left of them, just rusting away.

Re: Is it worth Saving
I have been trying to figure out the greenish paint that is on the first cub on this pic
my 61 o rebuilt (the red one above) had roughly the same color as that on it
I have also ran across parts that have had the same color green on it
just trying to guess if they painted the abused cubs that green
any ideas

Re: Is it worth Saving
I noticed that but have no clue. Down here with the rain and the weather in constant change you actually see that in a lot of very old cars and trucks too which makes me think it might be a chemical reaction with the paint to the moisture or something.
Or then again it could just be an "abused" cub LOL that some goof ball tried to paint green.
