That last step. paint
I want to find a way to paint my john deere 110 since I have started slowing creepin into the tractor restoring business the cub is getting sandblasted and I want to know how to paint and paint right. The john deere is first to be painted since it is ready and the cubs second I need to learn. Note I have all the tools now blast cabinet degreaser wire wheels sanders and paper cover tape. Just gotta paint and prep. I know prep is 90 percent of the tedious work. Any thoughts appreciated pictures of stuff you painted to so I can see if it looks good. Thanks LFR

How do you plan to apply the paint, rattle can, spray gun?

Re: That last step. paint
Well, I have been pecking away at a International. What I do is strip every part to bare metal, clean, and always sand the bare metal. Cleaning is very important, and cant be stressed enough. That means, when you think you have your part clean and ready for paint, clean it once more. Here is a taste of how I work on my tractors.
Front axel for a '68 cadet. The liquid in the bottle is Purple Power shop degreaser. I scuff and sand around with 220 grit, rinse off with water and repeat with P.P and the old tooth brush. Then dry, and I use toluene or rubbing alcohol for a final clean. Watch using a cloth that is going to leave behind any lint. Then I use this sealer, with a slight mix of hardener and reducer. Comes out looking like so after 3-4 coats: I always use a primer over the sealer, again, 3-4 coats: And the final stage before Cub Cadet Yellow paint: One tip about yellow paint, the more coats you can reasonably apply, the better because yellow is easy to miss a spot, and does not cover well.

I was told not to use rubbing alcohol as it has 30% water in it.

Re: That last step. paint
Now, I'm only helping you by responding to your post. Rinsing bare metal parts off with water is the recommended way of removing the dirt and grease when using Purple Power. Dry the parts right away. The alcohol I should have mentioned is 99.9%, and is found about anywhere, and does a great job. Or if you want to be a smarty-pants, you can use the toluene, or go to the parts store and pick up metal prep. What ever flash rust develops is quickly wiped away.
Still splitting hairs lpalma? Think after the caliber of my restorations I would steer some one wrong?, lets see how you prepared your 127. That way we can eye-to eye see how well my work measures up. Help us out here, post some pictures because your two cents is just that. State why you believe your argument, and any experience if any. 30% water don't mean a hill of beans unless your painting wet metal. It will save the kid more money in the long run to use the alcohol for small things, before the metal prep you buy at the store. The whole idea behind everything I suggested. Please don't be upset, but darn lpalma.
Now, for large areas of painting when using a spray can of paint can be difficult to avoid over spray because the can simply does not lay out enough volume. I had to wet sand many large items, and paint again to solve the problem. At any rate, the Jd should be a great experience in helping you to achieve knowledge. I would recommend above the lowest cost of paint, because you usually get what you pay for. Another thought to consider when painting, is if your tractor is going to be a worker. If its going to be a worker, use Magic paint.
Here are a few more of pieces to back up what I say to you. This piece seemed to have sucked up two cans of primer. Good luck, hope I've been a help! My ways of doing things are not the only way. I continue to see great restorations of these tractors through out the net!

Yes you should have said the alcohol was the pure stuff. Then I would not have thrown my 2¢in.
I do not have any step by step pics of the 107 I did just some of the reassembly. I did sandblast all the parts except the tranny and the motor, prep, primed, and painted with a spray gun.
There are pics out there just google 107.
