Traded this:
I looked at it and the shifter would rotate in a circle so i knew it was broke.
We fired it up, I put it in gear and let out on the clutch and we just sat there so i reached down and pulled up on the clutch pedal and we moved, so loading it just got easier.
I knew it had the sleve hitch setup on it before I went to get it, but its also got the spring assist. Its been repainted, but its not a very good paint job.
I pulled the trans, removed the shifter and fixed that and also discovered a loose shift fork and missing teeth on the reverse idler gear and no teeth on the rev/1st gear, so in deeper I go. I will post more pictures on the fix of this one!
For this:
Yes its a 100. Owner told me that it would run, but he couldn't get it to move, so he thought it had drive clutch problems and he knew it had pto clutch problems.

Re: The perils of buying a used cub cadet
Carl , looks pretty unmolested other than the PTO . Sounds like the clutch pedal return springs broken .
Rear lift with spring assist , original pan seat , mower deck , and some nice looking tires are a definite plus .
I think you did good even with the messed up transmission gears and shifter .

I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

Re: The perils of buying a used cub cadet
Here are some more pictures, mostly of the wear and tear, probably not the damage from the hammer mechanic.
How about a cracked seat. My seat is cracked too, but my crack is factory! (I wonder if I can get a response out of 'ole Vince) Steering wheel has a few chunks missing. Look closely and you will see the ignition switch, or a more common broken off toggle switch. Hood brace is broke loose on one side. Now for the fun. Notice the bent lift handle. I bet after it got bent they installed the spring assist. I am planning on trying to straighten it, I will let you know how that turns out. Also note the painted over 100 decal. Now for the fun, got to get the trans on the overhaul bench and get to work.

Re: The perils of buying a used cub cadet
Here is an update of the progress.
First I drained the oil using the drain plug in the bottom. I hit water before the oil. Probably drained about a quart of water off the bottom.
I opened it up and can you say yuck? Is that a gear tooth laying in the bottom among the muck? Did find 14 teeth in the bottom, one must be really ground up!
No teeth left on the 1st/rev sliding gear. Two teeth missing on the reverse idler gear. And finally a broken shifting fork.
So with some parts from the shelf and a recent purchase of used shifting forks, it is back together and installed, just need to finish hooking everything up, add oil and go for a test ride.

No damaged bearings...?!
When I rebuilt a tranny last year that had the same guck inside as yours, my gears/splines were not nearly in as bad shape as yours, but every bearing was shot!
