107-147 white Paint

Post by dag1450 »

Hey guys, im really getting pretty restless in the workshop! Its been very cold so i dont have many projects to work on, but i found these rims laying in the corner half done.lol. So here we go, The front rims are new to me wide front rims for the 127. They were blasted and primed about 2 yrs ago . The other rims r fronts off the diesel that need blasting, prime and paint. How im going to paint in this weather i have not figured out yet, i will probably ask Tom S for some detailed specs on his paint booth that i think he drafted(using a hair dryer) into the furnace flu in the basement. What im wondering is what have some of u guys used for white spray paint for the 107-147 series tractors. I know it calls for 902 white, which is whiter than 935 but creamier than plain white. Rustoleum almond is almost spot on for 935, so i found these krylon colors that seem closer. The duel is called ivory and the fusion is called dover. Im not trying to get crazy but if im going to paint i want it to match the best i can. Any input would b great.....or i will have to wait till the sun comes out and just do the best i can w my eyeballs against the original color hood. Thanks Dave

Dave, I was at Wally World this evening picking up some paint for some Wheel Horse weights that I am spiffing up a bit, and I saw that Ivory. I thought to myself that it looked like it would be a darn close match for wheels, decks, weights , etc. Please let me know which one you like. I can tell you on the Rustoleum red that I bought, it does come out a brighter red than the cap indicates. I used the "Sunrise Red" at first, but I picked up some of the Krylon Maxx "Banner Red" tonight hoping that it is a little closer to IH red. This stuff sure does seem to be a lot more durable than I remember spray can paint being in the past. Weird that we are both are looking at spray cans tonight.

I talked to Tom about a winter spray booth, but he lost me when he started talking about how the congruency of the flow rate and the air volume versus the angle of the dangle had to be indifferent to the pitch of the manifest destiny....or something like that. Pie charts to follow...

I have actually been setting parts in front of my 55,000 btu salamander heater then painting quickly, and turning the heater back on when the fumes die down. It sucks being poor!

Hello, I like the dover white. I've used it on a lot of my tractors. Not as a match but complete paint job, even though i don't like Krylon. Mike

Thanks Mike. For years all I really used was krylon, I thought it dried quicker than other spray paints. Now I live near a Home depot and the only thing they carry is Rustoleum which I do like now. Still takes forever to dry.....lol

My method for painting with rattle cans is:

1. primer (usually grey)
2. two coats of ivory/almond of any brand
3. last coat in CC colour from the dealership. If the part is not really seen, I don't even bother.

The rattle cans from the CC dealer are very expensive here, so the above method works well for me, especially with the yellow which does not cover over any dark colour very well...

For yellow, I found Dupli-Colour Bus Yellow to be a very close match to CC yellow.

Ben, Thats a good trick that probably works (almost) without fail in todays world. Not long ago u could not do that as easy for fear of different products would not be compatible. Lacquers and such, and im not sure if Krylon and rustoleum were compatible. Maybe some one could weigh in on that. I believe most spray cans r enamels today so that should work ok. I would still advise a small test before going crazy. Maybe u could clarify what year or models for that yellow u were talking about ? Thanks for the tip. Dave

The last few years i have did a lot of painting. The tractors i use a hvlp gun with hardener and reducer.rims and things not seen i use a rattle can.I also rattle can the primer.I always use cc yellow on the mtd-ccc tractors & the case ih fed yellow paint for ih cubs.I use the case ih gray and red primer and their 935 white.
I don't want to bore everyone to death so i will make this quick. The 1st tractor i did was my 1872.I lost count on how many times i painted it then had to strip it down and start over again. Most of that came from learning how to paint with the gun and getting the hardener and reducer right. But i learned the hard way not mixing the kind of paint and primer too.So i try to keep the same brand of primer with paint. On implements i also rattle can and have mixed the paint and primer.CC,Case IH,Valspar, and Van sickle.
Valspar is really good paint and primer.Van Sickle did not work good for me and i will never use it again.

I like painting with the 935 white can or sprayer and i also like painting red.
But yellow is a pain,Cub paint or fed yellow. The fed yellow a little bit easier to work with.
I have talked with a few others about yellow and i have heard the same.

Dave, so far, I have been working exclusively on IH-produced narrow frames, and have a few wide frames waiting in the wings and/or for parts.

Doog brings up a good point....there r lots of brands of spray paint on the market. I am shopping at my local stores and will drive within reason to get the right color. That being said i think the two big companies found pretty easy r Krylon and Rustoleum so that what i tried to stay with.

After lots of trips (in different lighting) out to the different places i have cub stuff stashed to look the samples up against factory paint. I compared the samples to the top of the (faded) hood, underside of the hood, a period correct QA36 thrower, and a 48 inch mower deck. The Dover was close but I feel if i had to err i would err on the creamer side vs brighter white side

The White winner for closest match to IH cub cadet 902 paint is Krylon Ivory Gloss! I feel this is very close in shade and color but may lack a very slight "green" hew that the factory has but again very close

Sorry Jack.....i wanted to get this chart up last night but i was rushed and forgot. U might want the Krylon Dover "fusion" for your original as that calls for a shade lighter.....or whiter. BUT my test was not for the color 901! Under each color is the serial number that it applies to, im sure yours would be under 901 but check it out. JUST SO U KNOW.....the Krylon Dover "colormaster max" had more of a pink tint to it.idk

I will just throw this in here now......The Rustoleum Almond (in the March 17 pics above) is a very.. VERY close match for cub cadet 935 white. I have been using it for years. Dave

I actually despise Rustoloem paints.... Mostly due to there extremely long dry times. When it takes 2 or 3 days for paint to completely dry so it can be handled... is way too long in my book... chances are if im painting something with a rattle can its cause im in a hurry.

That being said we have an ACE hardware store in town here.... and they have an Antique White that i really like.... dry time in 40 degree F weather is about 5 to 10 min.... in 80 degree F weather is about 1 to 2 minutes.....

Heck i even converted Joe M not long ago.... he calls is the fast dry paint!

Yeah, I've used Dave's ace paint it does dry quick but is a bit to dark for it to be a close match. I've found 24 hours and the rustoulm antique white to work for most of my workers. It is hard for me though as I need to paint outside when it's war most of the time. Going forward I will be using both ace and rustoulm just depending on what the use will be for...

I'm getting off subject.
I was wondering who makes the Cub Cadet paint?I think and could be wrong that valspar makes the iron gard "ih paint"?If this is correct does valspar make the CC paint too?

For you folks who want the paint to cure faster. Hit a store and buy one of the infrared heaters that use the quartz elements. Like this. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/r ... rtz-heater
I have a bank of 2 of them that I use to spot cure auto paint. They heat the item not the air. (bigger units are even used to cure powder coat paint, we had a few in the old plant used for that.)

This might b the last post.....or one more of the tires on the 127. I got the new used rubber mounted today. I just strong armed it without any tools so not to scratch up the paint. Used thinned down dish soap and all the muscle I had but it worked! These tires r a used set of chengshin tires that I collected. Very happy w them. I think they look bigger than the other set of Kendas i was thinking about using. All the same size but deflated these were bigger.
