102 light installation

Post by Farmallgray »

Do we have the instructions for installing the lighting kit on a 1x2/3? I can't seem to find it in the documents section. I just want to make sure I have all the correct hardware and such.

Todd, Although it doesn't tell you how to install lights, the 102/122/123 Parts Manual shows/tells everything needed for the light installation, however there is not one on this site.
May you always have as many landings as you do takeoff's.........

There's a 70/100 install manual on another cub site. That's the only one I've even seen

The rear light bracket has 2 holes that line up with the holes in the fender. One hole is 1/4" the other is 1/2". Both holes in the fender are 1/4". I was wondering if they used a flat washer on the bigger hole. Or did the bracket for the 1X2/3 have two 1/4" holes? I have the bracket from a 100. The parts list doesn't show a washer.

I don't have a tail light on mine but the fender has 2x 1/4" holes also.

Apparently they must have chaged the hole size in the bracket from the 70/100 to the 1X2/3 series. Kind of sucks because I made the bracket new using the one from my 100 as a pattern. If I had looked at the 102 fender I could have drilled the hole in the smaller size. Oh well, stuff happens. I'll just put a flat washer on it for now.

I went out and took a look at my 102. It does have the two 1/4" holes already there. I can provide dimensions should you need them. It also has the single Speaker 143 tail light. I have seen this style of light mount on many Cubs of this series. My assumption has been up to this point that's how the factory install looked. Disregard the 1x4,5 style seat mount, that is something I added to raise the rubber seat, everything ever said negative about the rubber style seat is cured by adding a riser mount sofar as I'm concerned- it feels great setup that way 8-)

Ken,
I already had the holes in the fender (I assume they were there from factory since both fenders have them).

I had always assumed that that style light came with the 1X4 series.

Todd-
I'm not a die hard purist by any means and leave that to those who are more versed in the matter than I but that sure seems to raise one heck of a darn interesting question.
Was there a point in the 1x2,3 series that the Grote light was changed over to the Speaker light ? I don't recall the SN on mine but do remember that it was somewhere along the line of nearing what would be considered a higher number for that series. 172xxx comes to mind for whatever reason. It's the middle of the night, I just got out of work, and I ain't lookin
Really though there's no telling what folks do to these over the course of nearly fifty years.

If someone had a parts catalog from just after the 1X4/5 came out, that may tell the story since the rear panel would have been changed to one with the screw inserts for the oval light.

That could well be but just try finding one. My TC-113 Manual (REV 26- May 30, 1991) is pretty cut and dry about it. Machines up to and including the 123, Grote light. 1X4,5 series and up, Speaker light.
Lew's image has got to be the one. That thing on mine, I'll guess I'll never know, he was a stripped down mutt the day I laid eyes on him but it goes like Hell and that's what matters to me
