Oil Filter Mount M18

Post by ReicheP »

Photo from the net showing an oil filter mount on top of the engine on a M18.

Was this a factory mount location?

Any consideration for relocating the filter to this location?

I personally would not want anything that can spring an oil leak on the muffler or above it. The 1810 and similar models had it on the firewall under the gas tank. Where that one is can't even be changed without leaking oil on the muffler guard that will smoke when hot. Whether or not any manufacturer put it up there I don't know but doubt it.

Nope....don't know why someone would do this. Extra heat would b my first reason not to. Paul....what don't u like about the stock location?

The only thing I could like would be for the "easier" filter R&R, but I agree with you guys about the negatives. Just wanting to know if it was a factory option.

Yea..it does look easier. Now if we could just get the gas tank down at an easy fill hight that would be perfect. Those 5 gallons cans get heavier every year. Then if u spill any.....u think to yourself...."I wonder what will catch on fire..... :o

Paul, I believe this is strictly an owner modification. And a real bad idea for all the reasons mentioned!

I have the bottom of a small jug that I use as a "mini pan" under the filters when I remove. That at least gives a way to prevent some of the mess. Choose a heavy plastic jug and cut everything but the last inch off.

I mounted up the mower deck on the 126 just the other day and then realized I'd forgotten about the oil change.
Found out that a bread loaf pan slips between the engine and mower perfectly.
The wife will never know the things I do when she's not around.

The filter mount looks easy nifty but yeah a mess and possible fire hazard for sure.
