how to disassemble the center bearing..

Post by mfowler »

for the 42" deck, cast iron ends for my 127?

I am not having any success trying to find a good deck, so maybe rebuilding my old one is the way to go. I have the center bearing still in the cast iron piece. I have cleaned it up, but can't see how to disassemble. Do you press it out from the top to the bottom so that the lower cup surrounding the spindle comes with the spindle?

On this site there are manuals for almost everything. Download and study the manual for your 42" deck. There is a good cross section view in the manual that should make it easy for you to figure out. Basically you remove the bolt holding the belt sheave on and the shaft comes out the bottom of the cast iron housing.

Very easy take out the bolt drive the spindle shaft down and out the seals and bears might just fall out! Inner race needs to be tapped out. Reassemble in the opposite order!

OK, so no retaining ring or other such, right?

Should the bolt that holds on the pulley have a grease fitting in it? Mine doesn't. Can I just drill and tap it for a grease fitting, or does it need to be "special"?

No retaining rings. The bolt should have a zerk. You can drill and tap for a fitting or just get the correct bolt.

Drilling a hardened bolt isn't for the weak of heart. Might just be less frustrating to get the correct bolt...
