IH 782 refurb
I sold my built 782 years ago and coincidentally bought a 682 to replace it weeks later. I finally got to converting it to hydro lift and figured while it was apart I'd repaint my last unpainted tractor. I also bought an oil pressure sensor and light and going to put it on as well as a remote oil filter. It's taking a long time for a mower that ran and cut perfect before but whatever.

Re: IH 782 refurb
OK, I've been on the fence for years now if not decades about the whole yellow vs. red thing. They all came off the same line did they not?
The reds were targeted toward the IH agriculture dealerships while the yellows were catered toward the homeowner is this not so?
Other than personal color preference they are the same machine- for the lack of a better description is there some level of snob appeal associated the whole thing? Who is the winner? One lost who knows nothing seeking enlightenment
In the words of the HAL 9000 I believe that I am really entitled to an explination
Nice job Kevin it's looking good

Re: IH 782 refurb
Thanks guys. This one was red from the start. IH built. It's my 7th x82 series I've done and only doing it because it was apart and one I keep. I assure you NONE of them were painted yellow and white of those 7, and two of them were yellow and white before I got done with them. I don't consider the MTD models highly collectible to a majority of cub collectors and unless I'm repainting one red to misrepresent it and make money I don't see the issue. I just far prefer the red on them.
I got the last of the red painted yesterday. All good except I'm disappointed with some imperfections on the fender pan. Probably not real noticeable but while it's apart a few hours to wet sand and respray is worth it to me. Most of the wiring done, 3 pt is back on it, oil filter mostly fitted up. If it wasn't for work and life I'd get it done.

Re: IH 782 refurb
By the way, how does the oil pressure light wire up? I'd assume power comes to one wire on the light and the ground goes from the light to the sensor on the motor. Is this correct thinking?

Re: IH 782 refurb
It's all coming right together now with very little time spent on it. Even these pictures from yesterday don't show all progress. Got almost all the wiring on and tucked back in where it goes, all the motor linkage and parts back together and ready, the new filters on, cut the firewall a bit for the remote oil lines since picture, and most importantly... sanded and repainted fender pan. It came out much better this time around. A few good hours should have this thing about done. The fender pan and seat is actually all back on now.
On a side note I was talking with my brother today and unless I'm forgetting one or two somewhere, this will make my 25th cub cadet or larger tractor I've repainted or restored.

Re: IH 782 refurb
Well just to be know I went looking on the web for replacement engines for the 82's as the old Series Two is no longer manufactured and deemed obsolete it would seem. As little as a couple of years ago you could still find them out there new. I came across a site called Small Engine Warehouse, they listed a replacement engine for the 82 series. It is a Brigggs 18HP Vanguard that is supposed to be a bolt in and plug in unit complete with engine cradle.
Has anyone here tried this conversion yet, is it any good?

The vangarud 18 was used on some of the Cyclops and 2000/3000 series models. I'm not a fan, I like the command series. Better.... imho

Re: IH 782 refurb
27 tractors. I forgot all about a couple 169s I redid some time ago. Some were just tear down and repaint. Some pretty well or mostly restored.
Mike, is the 29th a plow day? Even if I went to one I'd bring the 982. This one's too untested to go plow with after being through everything
Made some good progress after work the last two nights. Wiring is done, even the oil light. Hood adjusted, all sheetmetal back on and lined up, all the odds and ends mostly. Had to file points from pressure washing motor and reprime the fuel but it's running now. Hydro lift all work and shockingly no oil leaks. I was really expecting a few minor things like that. A few little things like foot pedal safety not lined up and finish up minor things... AND DECALS. My favorite part!

Looks great Kevin.
Ken...they say "drop in" replacement. But in fine print it say...as usual some fabrication is required. Hit up ray for a used Engine. Or....just buy a whole new used tractor. Still cheaper to buy another machine than pay $1400 plus shipping. Idk

Re: IH 782 refurb
I think I can mostly call it done now. All the small things have been taken care of. I was going to repaint deck and subframe but did this around 5 years ago and it just tends to get scratched, nicked, and rust anyway. I have some HD pics but figured I'd respect our members without high speed Internet here.
Aside from the hydro lift addition, oil filter, oil light, and paint, it has a 3 turn steering column, welded up wear points where the deck and subframe hang, and mtd style depth gauge like I did on my last 782. Also with the trunion beefed up and shimmed a bit more I can pull the front wheels barely off the ground. A lot more than I planned considering I cut the yard with it two days before teardown.

Re: IH 782 refurb
Thanks guys. Kind of glad I'm done with it. Didn't mean to get in that deep but it always happens
As for the foot rests, I have several sets from when I used to have old junk parts cubs. Every x82 series I've done with any intention of keeping got those foot rests. I think it requires one extra hole drilled and I had to notch one of these a bit for the lift handle before adding hydro lift. They do let water sit under there and try to rust. Personal preference I guess.

Re: IH 782 refurb
Kevin, as always, fabulous work!
I'm kind of torn about what to do for footrests on my 1872. Cub wants $20 for some non-skid tape now, so I might buy some stock of non-skid tape and cut it to shape. I will likely have to spend just as much but will end up with enough to make extra. I like the diamond plate, but I am not thrilled about the water they will trap, as mine is on winter Haban blade duty.
There is a "bedding" material that comes in caulk tubes that is used under flashing for rubber roofs, I have thought about putting that under diamond plate treads, but eventually some moisture would still end up residing there. Still torn...
Anyway, I don't know how you find the time, but great job!

Tom, what about masking it off and brushing on two coats of bed liner. I have done that on a couple of battery boxes and it seems to work very well.

Re: IH 782 refurb
This is what I used on the 982 I recently got to replace the worn and broken-up
original foot mats.
After cutting to size they are still about 1" short, but for a worker I was OK with that.
Harbor Freight Rubber Safety Mat 12" x 12" ~$6.
On their site search for self adhesive.

Ace Hardware has a material you can buy that looks original for dirt cheap then cut it to the correct shape and glue it on. That's how I've done a couple for a friend that wanted original. A few dollars does it
