Snow Plowing
I am going to be getting a IH built 582 cub cadet ready to snow plow this winter and I have a set of 75 pound wheel weights on it and I am wondering if that's going to be enough weight on the rear? I have ag tires on it to would they be alright instead of chains. I installed a spring assist on it I was wondering if anyone thinks it will make any difference on lifting the snow plow? Thanks, Joey.

Re: Snow Plowing
I have a 982 with 75 lb wheel weights and Goodyear 26x12 ags, it is used to operate a big 450 snowblower, I don't use chains on it, just go real slow. I have a 102 that I use for plowing and it has 23x10.50 ags with 50 lb weights and I do use chains on it. My 682 I installed a spring assist, you'll like that for your snow plow. For plowing snow if it were me in your 582 I'd get some chains, they are not expensive, with the weights your good to go, no worries
too many IH cub cadets

Re: Snow Plowing
I think that you are going to find your spring assist a huge help. Set it to the point where the blade lifts effortlessly. You will not regret this when a hundred pound lump of snow is stuck on the front blade.
If you are planning moderate snow removal tasks on level ground I think you should be OK. If heavy snow removal is involved or your on strong inclines there's going to be a lot of slippage. I run 52 pounds on the outside and 26 on the inside only because there is not enough room on the inside for two more weights. Of course with disc brakes one cannot do this. 80 pounds over the rear hitch, another 20 under the seat and my 200 sitting on top of that. In such a case be aware of the limitations of your machine. It's that one little itsy bitsy after dinner mint that will get you every time.
You just know what is going to happen next. Just what we needed in time for Thanksgiving now huh? Know your limitations now and enjoy
If your 582 is a later CCC built machine it may have the far stronger fine spline axles. I'm not sure of the starting number on them but many did come with them.
They do have their advantages over the coarse spline axles. Bang, crap!

Chains?, yup, 2 link with lugs!
Weight?, all you can find! cast wheel weights and load the tires plus some.
2072 with loaded ags, 75 lb weights, 2 link chains with lugs......look out Mother Nature

Re: Snow Plowing
Thanks everyone for the reply's I have not had one for snow removal for 14 years and we moved and now I have a paved driveway and I need one for snow removal this winter won't have time to get the 100 cub cadet ready. I was planning on fitting my gear drive 1872 cub cadet with the snow plow but just don't have the time right now. The 582 is IH built and has the cast iron rear in it I am wanting to later on putting a Kohler 18 Magnum in and putting fine axles in it I did put them in my 1872 cub that is gear drive. Thanks, Joey.

Re: Snow Plowing
Ken what happened? Were you moving dirt...or just driving around? Do you have a spare?
Joey...gear drive 1872? Was this made for pulling? Sounds kinda painful for a chore tractor. If you have some time... Could u post some pics. Ag tires or not....get a set of 2 link chains....they r a must!
Have fun!

Re: Snow Plowing
dag1450 I will try to get some pics of my 1872 cub before the end of the weekend. I wanted a super cub but I didn't want hydro so my dad said lets build a gear drive and it took a year to build it but that was working on it when we both got time. I put a cast iron rear end in it with the fine spline axles it is a real work horse I was amazed myself when it got done I am going to have to change the clutch spring when it needs a clutch it has a little slippage in 3rd gear. Joey.

Re: Snow Plowing
Dave, I had been pushing a rock, dirt, and sand mix. A lot of it. A foot high with the blade locked. It had never ever pushed that good before
Lesson to be learned don't do it with two link chains with cross bars on. It's too much traction and there's no slippage, something has to give. The axle stump came out of the spider gear with no trouble but it's going to be living inside the axle housing for a long time where it will do no harm. Alive and well again there will be no more of that

Re: Snow Plowing
Since you have a paved driveway, get a snow thrower ( single stage ) or snow blower ( two stage ).jdudding wrote:Thanks everyone for the reply's I have not had one for snow removal for 14 years and we moved and now I have a paved driveway and I need one for snow removal this winter won't have time to get the 100 cub cadet ready. As you can see with my 125 and QA-42 , it works quite well
I have a blade for my other 125 and haven't had it on since about 2009

Jeff....nice video! At about the 55 second mark....it looks like a steam locomotive huffing smoke
U have to use one of these Cub throwers to appreciate how good they work. At some point single stage got a bad rap.

Re: Snow Plowing
I have bran new 4-link v-bar tire chains on my model 72, over 23 x 10.5 x 12 rims with Goodyear Soft Trac turf tires. Inside the rear rims are a set of IH wheelweights, a 25# weight on the hitch, and a 12' 3/8ths log chain with chokers. I have no problem navigating through at least 8-10" of snow!
And for snow clearing, this sure does a great job!
