Special RARE combination hedge trimmer and lawn mower!

Post by Dave C »

LOL brought in a 102 to part out a few days ago and droped the cast end deck off, and the deck felt really funny. so i removed the subframe and the deck was just crumbling infront of me. So i then folded the deck in HALF by HAND!!!

Sad to say but I have seen that before. :(
The quality of the sheet steel use with the cast end decks left a lot to be desired.
In 1985 I bought a new replacement deck shell directly from IH and it cost $236.
Mowed my lawn with it every week for about 8 years. When the season was over I'd pull the deck and clean it out. Some years I even painted it before storage. It held up well doing that.
Then one year I just left the deck on and did nothing. That following Spring that deck shell had vaporized into dust. Amazing the way those cast end housings last forever though. No shortage of finding those things around  Hang on to the spindles and pulleys, that stuff is pricy- it may come in handy one day.

Years back I was an engineer for a (nameless) European car manufacturer here in the US. One of the lines used Russian steel, they were rusting before we got them off the boat!
