582 repower

Ditching the 16 hp Briggs in a 582. Would like to find an 18 magnum like I put in my 682. Short term I'm looking at a 1440, is this engine compatible with the 82 series? I have zero knowledge of mtd line of cadets, but thought that series was nearly an 82 series

Hello, i don't know about a 1440, but a mag 18 out of a Sears/Craftsman will work nice. The pto off the Briggs will bolt right on that Mag 18. They both have 1" pto shafts. Mike

I’m sure the 1440 Briggs will require a longer driveline. I repowered a 1810 with one a while back...1810 had be left with no spark plugs for a while and the jugs where toast. I think the driveshaft needed to be about 3” longer. I’m sure with a 582 someone makes a driveshaft to fit. If not it wouldn’t be hard to make your own! Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks, wasn't aware a craftsman mag engine would work I'll keep an eye out for that too.

Thanks, I'm not overly concerned about the driveshaft got some options there. This engine had low compression and had a lot of blowby. When something comes up I'll give an update of how it's going, looking forward to getting this one going. The tractor was built right at the IH/CCC transition. Has CCC on the the serial plate but says International above cub cadet on the dash but no IH steering wheel cap. Cast iron rear and all else typical IH

Brought home a plastic cub

My search for an 18 magnum didn't last long. Found this running 1860. Has new seat and good 50c deck w casters front and rear. Will be yanking the engine and cleaning it up later this week and put in the 582.

Too bad, looks like a nice tractor to flip. You need to find a 2185 or a 2042 with a command in it for the repower but what do I know.
Keep us posted on your progress.

I did find a couple command engines but I've been burned enough times on buying engines to write a country song. I'll never buy an engine again that's not in a tractor and I can run it under load. Got a good deal for this setup. As far as nice looking I'd say 50 yards away going 50 mph. You can have all the plastic if you want, not the greatest. I sure like my opposed cylinder engines, best thing about that 1860 far as I'm concerned. It'll be in the 582 soon enough. Here's some pictures of the plastic, if there's remotely any interest in it come get it otherwise trashing it

If the grill “casting” is good I’m looking to fix a 2082... I have all of the other parts.

Speaking of plastic parts... is anyone familiar with a product called Plast-Aid?
Check out this introduction video on youtube.

I've never used it but, it looks pretty amazing.
Can be ordered online and not expensive.

Rick,
They look ok...
you never know when you might need them though, you may go for the one eyed wonders one day and will need a part or two.

Thanks I'm pleased with it.

I'll send you some pictures of it

I have a question- got the engine out and cleaned up. Is there a flywheel adapter to work on my geardrive 582? Never seen this style adapter that was in this engine out of the 1860. Not sure if I'm going to have to search for the right flywheel out of an older mag engine or not

No adapter, use an old style drive plate. Might have to shim or get longer drive shaft. My Sears mag 18 had a 2 hole hub but not the same as Briggs. I drilled 2 holes in an old style drive plate and had to add some shims. Been a long time hard to remember. Mike An edit, might be some 1806 parts.

OK thanks, I'll have to try to find a drive plate I don't have one, know a good source?

Any gear drive Narrow Frame should have what you need.

The briggs used a ball bushing to help with any engine height alignment issues, within reason, the the other driver you have to get the driveshaft to line up by using shims under the motor or under the clutch lever bracket, if not it the diveshaft will bind and your clutch will not work well.
Drill 4 holes on the old one or get one from a 1806. The ball bushing flange will fit in the kohler drive hub.

Well got the 582, 18 magnum conversion completed. Very pleased with the results, everything was pretty straightforward. Also thanks for the replies on my 782 issues, I adjusted the pto air gap and adjusted the valves, runs well. Also got a decent parts 782 at a sale over the weekend swapped out the shoddily painted metal for good original. All the red cubs on one side of the garage, yellow on the other

Also got a third compete set of IH hubcaps that came with the parts 782. They looked rough I like to think I cleaned them up a little better

The red collection looks great! As for the hub caps....at first glance....I thought it was a picture of your breakfast pancakes on the kitchen table
Rick....on a serious note, it seems that you have what's called "Cub fever" or today people throw around the word addiction. Are you seeking any treatment for this?

Haha, yeah I definitely suffer from cub fever. I used to be a big time avid hunter but when all my local spots dried up and it got to be too stressful dealing with other people that thought they owned everything I called it quits. I definitely see a spike in cub fever during the spring turkey season, buying more tractors takes my mind away from it. I’m home more this way not out in a tree stand or ground blind anymore
