Chunk of metal in the oil

Post by Ben Morong »

CC 125 has been blowing blue smoke out the breather vent. Checked it; it wasn't upside down. Drained the oil, it was black and this piece of metal was on the magnetic drain plug. Can anyone identify it?

Sure looks like it could be. But here's the thing. It's wider than the gap between the piston and the bore so how would that be?

 Ken.... yeah no explanation for that. I doubt the cylinder wall is compromised....so if it is the oil ring...piston should look....well... interesting :o

Didn't a lot of the old connecting rods have a little keeper you bend over the nuts or bolts when tight? Can't remember if it's Kohlers or other stuff I've torn into. Could be part of that and not affect the engine performance
From the first Original to the last x82 Series... you can't beat an IH Cub Cadet!!!

I got the head off the K301 that was blowing smoke and had that little chunk of metal in the oil. Here's how the cylinder wall looks. I can see something, I can't feel it with my fingernail but maybe a little bit with a pick. Bad? (The orange you see is RTV sealant that the DPO used on both sides of the head gasket).

Might not feel bad... Sure does look bad. Never saw that before. What are your plans for the engine now?

Hone and re-ring, see if I get away with it.

X2 on that but you will know more once you get it out. It looks a lot like aluminum smearing. No concernable ridges. Still a bit of crosshatch left too. Those bores can tolerate a lot. Send a ball hone down it and see what you have. Kinda pointless to toss a bag of money at it if its just a little smearing. Probably needs a new piston though.

I was taught years ago, whenever you have a Kohler apart to replace the rod.
