snow pics and winter stories

Post by Don Bellamy »

Well it happened ! woke up to 5 inches of HEAVY wet snow out here on the left coast, temps were 34 degrees. We had a few days where the temps dropped to 25 degrees but it wouldn't drop the white stuff. That would have been fun to push but as it was the temps came up and the crap came down. Today was the second time I have plowed with the Original and non trip blade but the first time since I loaded my tires and have 1 wheel wieght.
This cub is amazing!! With the wet stuff it would gather snow 5 ft ahead of the blade and build up to a foot above the blade and it never even spun a tire 8-)
I pushed the snow off the sidewalk for about 1/8 of a mile and did 6 driveways in 2 hrs. It is starting to rain now so the only snow that will be left will be the piles I made

Nice, jealous here. It's dumping rain here all day and might change over to snow mix tonight. I'm quite anxious for snow as this will be my 1st winter with the cubs. Just rebuilt the cc36 thrower and replaced several parts on it and now she runs sweet. Here's a link to a video I made on it's 1st run  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6elM9y2ziQ . I just started collecting Cubs in June and have major Yellow Fever. I bought an Original to restore as a new "hobby" and didn't realize it would take over my life! Couple pics of my gems...

Got enough snow to run the O', didn't have lights on it so I picked up 2 12v mini spotlights at the local hardware store for $5 each, they work much better that I thought they would. Got to plow the driveway :D , need to put some chains on it as traction was limited.

Sadly, yes I had a lapse of common sense and ended up with a ripped tendon on my middle finger, smashed but saved (so far) Pinky, and lost the top inch of my Rt. ring finger last Saturday..

OUCH!!! Man that had to hurt , I lost the end of my middle left finger in a machine shop accident 20 yrs ago so i know your pain.. .
When I first installed my QA42A on my 982 I was having problems with the front electric PTO not engaging all the time . I eventually discovered that the air gap wasn't set correctly on the PTO , but it scared the bejeves out of me and I made sure that I didn't work on it or the blower with the tractor running . That auger is a blur when its on .
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

Finally!! We got our first snow today! Less than a quarter inch overnight, and no pics because it melted before I could get out the camera. They've had snow to the north, south and west of us, but being close to the ocean (less than a mile), it's a little warmer and we've missed out so far. But the snow blade's on the Original and the 125/loader's ready!

Jnigbor dont be ashamed I did the same stupid thing last winter. got in a hurry and common sense left the driveway. luckily it just nipped my ring finger and slightly cut my pinky. I felt so stupid after i did it but it could have been worse. It hurt like a B but still it could have been worse. I guarantee you wont forget that lesson. I know i havent. Sorry to hear it happened.

Picked up a 147 today, took a little longer...

Post by Sminkey »

Well, we had some rain a few days ago that killed alot of the snow we had here. For a week I've been planning and waiting for today to go get my new 147. I've been jonesin for some snow cause of the rain and sure enough when a plan to take a 5 hour roadtrip to pick it up, it's a whiteout and the trip took a little over 7 hours!! But made it home safely and love my new rig

No snow yet but they're saying 8 to 12 inches starting midnight and going all day tomorrow. Just got in from the barn, getting another one set up for snow duty. I bought it last month, a 104 with a creeper, runs nice but it needed a clutch throwout bearing, got that in, also now has tires that hold air (!), 2-link chains, a snow blade and a home made spring assist (so what if it's got a yellow seat? I'll paint it black next summer). It should do OK but if anything happens to it, the Original and the loader are ready too.

Went to bed last night with just a dusting on the drive way, woke up to over 18 inches and snowing hard! I took the Toro 2 stroke out before breakfast, thank god that it was light fluffy snow cause I would still be out there! After 2 hours inside I'm headed back out to do it again as there is about 4 inches on the drive way. The city/state has yet to go by here, as I type I hear the second SUV of the day drive by. Hopefully some action shots of the loader/125 and 782D/54" power angle later when I get to the parking lot next door!

All the snow that southern Maine didn't get in December came to visit over the last ten days, and the boys (Original, 104 and 125/loader) have been earning their keep. Anyone ever heard the expression "LOADERS RULE!" -- I couldn't have done this with a shovel or a snow blade. The loader's been doing a great job since I put enough weight on it (a 55 pound Bolens weight on the inside of each rear wheel, on the outside a Simplicity 25 pounder and a IH CC 27 pounder, and the box on the back is full of lead wheel weights), But I found that even with all that weight my aggressive ATV tires are no match for glare ice, and they're also taller, raising my center of gravity. I'm going to have to find spacers, and put on some 23-10.50-12 turf tires with chains -- then it'll be unstoppable!

BEN be careful of how much weight you hang on the tractor the axle bearings wont take it too long . my dad has a 125 with a loader on it has 26x12x12 tires with calcium &25#cub wts.&farmall cub wts.and a counter weight box originally had about 150#of cement but dad removed that and put in 6 50# weights which ended up taking the axle bearings out twice and axles both times which is when the weight box was removed....while the tractor was weighted like this though you could lift a 350 chevy engine and carry it around steering it was a problem though...without the counter weight box it will still lift about 300-350 lbs.back end gets pretty light though
