Yes, it’s A 44.
The roller should be available in plastic now. Decal on top is just the IH logo the one on the chute is a safety warning. Check maple hunter for decals.

Are the side spindle assemblies serviceable? As in, can you take them apart and replace the bearings and seals? Mine spin freely. Should i just grease them and move on? The middle spindle must have been just worked on by someone. New timken bearings. The bottom seal was trashed, however. I will be replacing both seals on that when it goes back together.

Nice job there Gibby. Yes front side should be bent back to a right angle of the top. Your 44 is in pretty good shape. Bearings and seals all replaceable. I have a thread somewhere on fixing up my 44c deck.

Thanks dag. Is there a recommended vender for bearings, seals, front roller, and wheels? My wheels are shot, it would be cool to get some that color matched the deck like the old ones.

Thanks

I spent a couple hours with a welder re-profiling the front skids and welding up the oblong roller mount holes.

Looks great. Couple things to think about. The rear hanger "u" brackets bolts tend to pull through the deck sheet metal. U should consider welding a plate inside for the three bolts, or at a minimum install big washers on the inside. This is a little tricky with the baffles so close but it can be done. I like the idea of a 3/8" round rod welded around the bottom edge. I did that and I think it added lots of strength to the bottom flimsy edges. That idea again is in my rebuild thread. The discharge side rear wheel bracket is very prone to cracking at the weld to the deck. Any extra help there is always welcome. Honestly I don't see many that are not broken and patched up. Keep the pictures coming. Check eBay for bearings and seals. I know a couple other places but don't want to say till I check them out.

Is the 3/8 rod to add rigidity? Ill look into the discharge side wheel. I think ill do washers for the lift brackets as the metal is still pretty thick. Thanks for the tips.

What are the two holes for at the end of the discharge chute?

Thanks

I want to say those holes were for a bolt on deflection sheild inside the discharge. In the search bar up top put in "overhaulin a 50c deck" I posted some of my pics on that guys thread.

Nice fast work!
Your center spindle can be rebuilt outside 2 should be used until they explode and then buy 2 used ones to match the center and rebuild! The water pump bearing type like the outer two are a sealed unit. New bearings cost about the same as a complete NEW spindle assembly from MTD.
Keep up the good work and keep us posted

Probably like old car water pump set-up. On one of my rebuilds I searched for new bearings and I was seeing old car water pump rebuild kits super cheap. But they r not drilled for grease...or threaded.

Those holes are for a deflector for the chute. Most people take them off and pitch them because it clogs up easily. A mulching plug can also be installed there. I’ve never seen a factory one but I made one that works well.

Around here decent shells are getting harder to find. Specially the pin on ones. Have been looking lately because I have one maybe two years left on mine.
And I even take it off every end of season clean and paint the inside. Rust never sleeps

Ken..that belt looks scary..lol. My brother had a belt go on his exmark mower. He jumps on Amazon and buys one listed as an "Amazon choice" for his mower. He calls me all excited how his Amazon belt was under half the price of an exmark belt. I said to get a good belt on order as a new backup. He text me two weeks later..."I guess i should have bought the real belt.
As for the rust...pop rivit a chunk of old license plate over it. The grass should clog what don't fit too tight.. :)

Dag, I'm done mowing for the year.
The rust hole is pretty much confined to one corner.
But that's usually the case. And how it begins.

But it's important to keep up after decks come storage time. This one was in real nice shape until a couple of years ago. When I hurt my back in 17 I left it on the machine all Winter, by the following Spring the rust hole had shown up. That's how fast it happens.

Being able to powder coat anything in virtually any color (including the correct IH and MTD colors) at a moments notice is one thing I miss about the old job. That and when they removed the old vapor degreasing tank. That tank was GREAT, used 1,1,1-trichloroethane and you could take a dirty, greasy engine block, Drop it in there and watch as it all just rinsed off. Stuff would even get into oil passages and clean out sludge like nothing. Of course if you stuck your hand in the vapor you would seriously regret it as it would attack the oil in your skin and maker it into something like paper in about 2 seconds...
