Power steering box
Anyone have any experience rebuilding the power steering boxes like from a 1862 or a Super? I know there is a kit available from JD i think thats cheaper then cub cadet with all the O-rings. I am curious if anyone has figured out what sizes are needed to buy them from Mcmaster carr?
The kit is like 100 bucks from JD and doesnt even come with all needed bearings. seems like alot for 10 O-rings!

Re: Power steering box
I know Tom has done that box. I was about to do my grass cutter 2072 a few years back but the drip never got bad enough to justify. But to prepare for this job I started hording seal kits from eBay....lol. I think I have a few more buried somewhere else too. This seal kit has a lot of different numbers. Midwest steering has them all listed. I can sell you one for half price but I can't say how fresh they are. From my information I'm guessing they are from around year 2000.

Re: Power steering box
Dave - As dag says, I did this years ago on my 1872. Wasn't too bad a job, but make sure you follow the Cub directions to the letter. Also, I found that it was helpful to review the directions from the 82 series manual as well as the Cyclops manual as they are worded slightly differently with different illustrations. The steering unit is the same between 82 series and Cyclops, but the manuals give slightly different perspectives on the same job. (Two poorly written instructions are better than one!)
I made the holding assembly they describe from thin plywood, but metal would have been better. Make sure you get the thin shims they reference to keep the rotor centered during assembly. The final act of putting the cover on is an act of faith, you can't really be sure a spring hasn't jumped out if you don't put the cover on squarely. Land the cover square, with purpose, and don't let it up again the slightest bit. Keep pressure on it until the bolts are holding it firm. A cool headed helper is useful here. I did it alone, it was rather stressful. I redid this step several times as I wasn't sure I had kept pressure on the cover well enough to keep the springs trapped. Finally got it, worked out great.
I bought the JD kit. I think I paid about $80 at the time, but I didn't feel the need to replace anything beyond what the kit included. Maybe post back with pics of your success!
Good Luck!

Re: Power steering box
Ok so this is what im up against. I have a Steering box out of a super that was a burn victim. So there isnt anything left of anything rubber or plastic left in this box. the needle bearing is pretty bad also.
What i ultimately need is a Super box for a super im building. I have 5 short boxes out of Cyclops. My thoughts were to just steal the shaft and tube from the burn victim and swap it to the short box. likely ill need some o rings to doctor up the short box along the way.
secondly i thought i could bring the burn victim box back to life.... but at the cost of the seal kit and everything else i think its gonna put that out of reach. Or at least more then just buying a short box fomr ray or a box from a JD 318 or whatever.
But if i could buy the o rings from mcmaster for pennys on the dollar then i might give it a try.... if it works great. if not im only out 20 or 30 bucks. not 130 bucks.
DAG i might take u up on one of your kits. at least id have parts to make the short box into a long box.

Re: Power steering box
Dave, ok, you have more than the standard rebuild going on! I would forget the burn box and just salvage the longer tube and shaft as you plan.

Re: Power steering box
Ok i actually found a kit i had bought god knows when and got the swapout done... i hope.
I think the people of ROSS must have been slightly crazy cause it seems pretty much impossible to reassemble the unit as the way they say you should.
The 2nd to last step of putting the 2nd set of 3 springs into the port block recesses and getting them to stay while u install all 3 and then flip it upside down and install it on the stack is next to impossble to do. the springs refuse to stay in those recesses. I ended up putting the last few steps together upside down and the flipping it and putting the whole mess on all at once. i dunno i hope its good!

Ok well i didnt get any pictures during the rebuild process but here is some of the tractor. It is comprised of parts from at least 2 burn victims and a few other tractors.
