rear engine rider transmission
I am trying to rebuild a 3 speed transmission for my old 85 cadet rear engine rider. I have two transmissions and the manual and was able to combine parts to make one except for Part 21 - bevel gear - manual says replace both bevel gears with set 56-671-C1. Both transmissions that I had - they were bad - rust from water goes to the bottom and ruined one - other had a sheared tooth. I don't know who made these transmissions, but I do know they were used by multiple manufacturers. Does anyone have any ideas who made the transmission or on parts sources or...?

Re: rear engine rider transmission
I’ve never messed with the cub rear engine riders. Peerless made gear boxes for a lot of brands, I’m guessing after a full clean down you did not find any ID tags?

No ID tags - but I think it might be a Peerless...

Re: rear engine rider transmission
It is part 21 - in this case the bevel gear is the same on a 60 with a four speed. It is 490-714-R1 in that illustration. After digging through many images, I found out that it is a Foote transmission. Fafnir? Do you know of a source for those gears? Thanks in advance! John
Re: rear engine rider transmission
The same transmission may have been used in an old Wheel Horse/Toro rear engine rider.
Check these links to see if #41 might be the same.

I have a cross reference book for cub cadet and it does not list that 490714-R1 with a foote number, but the 63736-c1 kit has a foote part # FF-2567

Re: rear engine rider transmission
Thanks indy61 - I think they are the same - I will try to verify at home tonight. They are proud of it! I have a source for another used one - pretty cheap, might try one more time before I order the kit from ebay. I appreciate the help! JW
Re: rear engine rider transmission
Seller says it's new - has a best offer - free shipping - seems to be very hard to find - if it's what you need than I would get it. You may not find another.

Re: rear engine rider transmission
I don't know if it would work without dimensions, but this pinion gear is integral with the shaft, while the one that I need is removable and held in with a snap ring. Bearings/bushings are also a different design. It might fit, but I really don't know. I agree with your thinking and would jump if I knew it would fit. Thanks again - I will check out my other source and update all.

Re: rear engine rider transmission
Update on the RER transmission. I found two more used units and now have a total of four. Combining all of them, I can build one transmission. The problem seems to be that the pinion gear and shaft are at the bottom of the transmission case and if any water at all gets in, it rusts the gear to the point that it is unusable. Last week I found and purchased a NOS Foote transmission on Ebay. I am happy to get it. I should be good to go with a spare!
Thanks for the help, I plan on using my 122 for landscaping work as a tractor and mowing with my little 85 Cadet. I have two model 60's that I will eventually try to build one from. They are 4 speeds forward with reverse from the Camshaft - interesting design that I hope to also see running.
