PTO Switch 1811
I put a new MTD PTO switch in my 1811.
The PTO turns on but doesn't stay in the full up switched position.
You need to hold the switch "up" to keep the thrower running.
Does the switch require input from another source say the seat or foot switch?
I have an Amazon aftermarket switch and it does the same thing.

Re: PTO Switch 1811
Paul,
Your pto may need adjusting of the air gap. Should be a procedure in the manual.
There is a pto relay thingy on the left side of the dash tower under the side panel, check the connections and grounds.
Seat switch? Is it bypassed, if so check those connections, also the reverse switch is it also bypassed?
If it still does it looks like you will be shoveling!

Re: PTO Switch 1811
It’s the safety circuit! Look into a bad or not jumped out seat or reverse switch. The clutch has nothing to do with it. Last thought is a bad relay. Some only have one, others have two, I’m not sure why though!?!

Re: PTO Switch 1811
The switch simply won't stay snapped up into position. Even when motor off the switch won't stay "up".
I've been running it with a cable tie holding it on.

Re: PTO Switch 1811
Paul,
If you ordered the 925-0893 PTO switch, it is correct for the 1811. It does not stay up like the one on the 1650.
Leaving it tied up to get it to work will eventually melt some wires going to the pto relay if used like that. So it is back to what Joe and I said about checking all the safety switches and such.
What happened to the old one that was on it?

Re: PTO Switch 1811
Thanks guys for your suggestions. It does use a relay (NLA) and I'm thinking the seat switch might be the issue. The old switch was rusted shut after numerous years of sitting out in the rain.
I believe this is the correct wiring diagram for the PTO system.

The schematic looks correct for your 1811, like lew said, the black wire might burn out if left tied up. I would look at the seat switch first, it’s easy to get to and very exposed to salt/snow when blowing. If it’s bad I should have a good used one. The reverse switch I’m guessing has already been jumped? It makes sense to have it there for reverse mowing, but you really want the blower to have a chance to clean out as you back up, plus you have a clear shot of the blower in front of you. Last would be the relay, again I’m sure I have used ones, I would meter anything I send out so we know it’s good before I ship. Also as you go though everything make sure the connections are clean and tight. The really needs to be grounded as well, make sure the grounds are clean. As you clean a connection, cover the cleaned materials with dielectric grease, this will ensure a long lasting circuit.

Re: PTO Switch 1811
Thanks Joe, the Rev switch probably has been jumped as you suggest. Where is it located?
The 1650 with blade did its usual excellent job of cleaning the 15".

Re: PTO Switch 1811
Reverse switch can be seen through the shifter handle slot. The plug is white, kinda a weired one pin a plastic spacer and a second single plug. You can reach through the slot and twist the spring steel with needle nosed plyers, or removed and it can just hang.
The seat switch sticks up through the fenders under the seat!

Re: PTO Switch 1811
The reverse switch on mine gets repurposed and turns on a back up LEDs mounted next to the rear marker lights. Makes it so much nicer when you're trying to back up in dark spaces. I use the deck up tight against things while trimming so don't want it shutting off. Also bypassed the seat switch, but have a switch on the dash to make it work when I'm mowing the banks, don't want that beast coming over on me with the blades running!
As for the wiring there are two versions, up to serial 756,999 it used this version After 757,000 it was this way,

Success!
.
Dug the 1811 outta the snow and was able to inspect the seat switch. One of the wire terminals not plugged into the seat switch.
Inspection showed the terminal was bad. Crimped on a new 1/4" blade terminal and PTO works as it should.
Any chance we can get these 3 wiring diagrams added to the documents folder?
Thanks again for advice!

Glad it was an easy fix Paul.

That is a great idea, but most of the ones I had the tang was always snapped off though.

Re: PTO Switch 1811
That seems to be the way many were bypassed. The 1641 I have was just removed from the posts and then mounted with the lever off to the side, the latest super still has it wired per the factory! Only wiring change I've found on it was someone replaced the seat switch with a different one and grafted on a new connector. When I'm done it will have a few updates with fuses and relays to make it last a while. I HATE chasing bad grounds...
