Custom build 1772 Diesel

Was aquiring parts to build this for Several Years. started with a Kubota D662 I got from Ray Weaver was out of a cub cadet zero turn. Then i picked up a Burn Victim at a red power roundup maybe in 2008? joe? The burn Victim was a 982 with a cast rear, pto and 3 point. Following that i got ANOTHER burn victim from joe which was a 2072... pretty well stripped down, but i salvaged the upper part of the steering column... long shaft power steering. Took a cyclops steering box from a 1862 and installed the long shaft from the burn victim. Of course. new tires, power coated everything... or most everything. Drive shaft from a 1440 i think, along with the coupler from jeff in pa.
I am rounding the finish line of cub cadet kubota specific parts this build included repoped parts: Both Engine mount side plates, Engine cradle, battery box, Fan bracket, idler bracket and exhaust bracket.
Not complete yet... but i finally test run her today. after replacing the injector pump which was stuck solid!

Wow what a cool project! Was that your first time hearing that engine? I have lots more questions..but I won't bother you with my needs. Lol. Looks so cool. Some day my all painted and ready to assemble 1572 will make it back together. Hopefully. Maybe.

Dag,

Yea it was the first time i heard that engine run. I tried to run it a few weeks back but was not getting anything for fuel at the injectors.... finally pulled the pump and found the rack froze and all 3 plungers stuck up. So no fuel delivery. found a good used pump on ebay and droped her in yesterday

Ask all the questions you want! ill answer the best i can.

I think the 982 fire tractor was red power 2007 at Bloomsburg.

Frame is from a 2082 I bought with no engine or tires. Funny part is I bought that 2082 around 2012? I just bought the tires/rims in February and deck from the same guy last week!

I’ve been watching Dave’s projects for years now, this one like all of his, is turning out quite nice!

Looks great, but umm the engines in backwards.... :lol: So when does it get a turbo?

I was thinking the same thing steve. I remember one of my first utube videos ever watched was that Cub cadet with the turbo... where he throttles it up and down a few times. Dave's video reminded me of that.

Looks really great!! Is that a new wiring harness? I know they can get pretty stiff and crusty I guess from the cheap wire and age. How did the fuel tank drop in? Did you have to do any mods to get things to fit?

Nice work as always Dave, what size battery is that,this one hits the hood when you close it. I am trying to find one to fit in my 1512.

Myself and joe went out on a mission many many years ago to make harnesses. we started with the ones that were the biggest problems. 1x67 and 1x89 due to the cloth covered wires... we sourced all new wire, ends, plastics everything.
We later expanded and made harnesses for original to QL series. At some point joe aqquired a 782D and needed a new harness. So at that time there was not one to be purchased anywhere. So we made those also... i think we made 3 or 4... complicated little bastards!!!

So this was the last one i think. If we make more i will certainly simplify things a great deal. Mostly harness exit points can be combined i think.
As with the otheres i was able to source all new ends and plastics.

For the Fuel tank disaster......... So to get people uptospeed.
As you know the Diesel tank is different and goes under the seat. we all know that. Well what i did not know is that Super Diesel Tanks are differerent Again. A standard diesel tank will interefere with the Rear PTO. I guess if you have no PTO its not a problem. Well this tractor does!
So i was off to another option, dug throught my pile and found a tank from a 1420? the LT tractors from the same series with 82 fenders had a tank thats very very close to a diesel tank, same brackets even. Well that tank didnt work either....
OK back to the drawing board.... finally found a Super Diesel tank.... GREAT! a butt ton of money later... i went to install that thinking my troubles are over. WRONG!!!
So the tractors Base is a 982 CAST IRON rear. Come to find out the cast transmissions are wider then the aluminum ones, so the tank ends up interefering with the transmission!!!
So.... i went back to the LT tank... got the heat gun out and started to modify that tank. several hours later i got it pushed in where it was gonna hit the PTO. finally done! ugh.

Wow .. you are..or were in the wiring deep! Great job! The dash looks funny to me without the glow plug indicator. Lol. Sorry to bring up the tank lol. The only reason I mentioned it was I remember several guys over the years having tank fitment issues with cast iron rears and pto and three points. Glad you got something to work.
My 1572 is all stock, no pto. My issue is not a big one but more annoying. Every time I go to Ray's I look at the rear diesel fender supports for ones like mine on the 1572. He always has a few sets he says are from diesel but never have I seen a set like mine. Idk if mine were a one year only or just the super and the other diesels have different ones. Both of mine were welded and patched by previous owner and I could fix but I thought I would just like to get new used ones. Kind of my own little mystery. Lol.

The fender mounts for diesel supers are different then GT fender brackets. The front one is very similair just 1.125 inches taller. The rear ones are completely different then GT ones

Na, no turbo on this one...it already cost enough money to build!

maybe on the next one. .....although i have said that a few times now. this is my 3rd diesel build.

Dave - Looking great! Good job on the fuel tank persistence. It's worth it when it all comes together.

I paid Ray dearly for a rear PTO and I've only ever used it twice, with the 442 tiller I "just had to have". I've toyed with the idea of developing a way to have a 3-point snowblower, but just so much work to get the power transmission worked out. I use my 3-point a lot, but the PTO was just a lark. I gave up on having a vegetable garden, so the tiller just isn't needed regularly. I've also toyed with the idea of a 3-point chipper, but just more random thoughts. Anyway, keep the pics coming!
