With winter approaching, I thought I'd post some pictures of a dump box project I undertook for my 123, in case it would inspire someone else for a winter project. My inspiration came from needing a trailer, but having a city yard so small that a trailer was impractical. I came across photos of a dump cart made by Brinly and thought, "hey, that will work!", so the project was born.

I saw two disadvantages with this design: the weight is carried quite far out, limiting load and placing a lot of stress on the rear lift, which was never designed for this. The volume was also relatively low. Then I came across a Simplicity option called a Carry All.

At this point the solution came to me, which is a marriage of both designs. So I bought a used dump cart, took some scrap steel angle iron and the mower lift frame from an old 125, and got started.

Here is the end result, but more details of the build will follow, so stay tuned!

Very cool project! More pictures for sure! I have a cart with no axle I found on the side of the road, I have ideas but need the time, and the need. With a backhoe a loader on a cub carts etc.

Nice! More pictures needed for sure!
Does it trip easily but stay secure with load? Manageable fully loaded? In other words tried and proven worthy?

Hey thanks guys!
It was a good use for an old dump cart and it had the perfect dimensions. Being just slightly narrower than the tractor, I can get in almost anywhere with it, without the extra space needed to manoeuvre a trailer.
It's performed well so far as we moved 4 yards of soil, 5 yards of cedar mulch and half a dozen bags of potting soil. (Yup, we were busy in the yard this summer.) When I designed it, I made the balance point so that there's a slight weight bias towards the tractor. In other words, it naturally wants to remain horizontal, and requires mild lifting effort to get the box to dump (this is with an evenly distributed load of course.) Even so, I do have a trip handle (the black vertical handle in the photos) to secure things.
The obvious advantage over a trailer is manoeuvrability; the disadvantage is reduced weight carrying ability. As it hangs off the rear of the tractor, too much weight in the box means reduced steering control, even the whole front of the tractor lifting off the ground, which could be dangerous.
Fortunately, I did some tests in the early stages and concluded we could carry about 300 lbs comfortably. My wife and I stood in the box and sufficient weight still remained on the front axle, so that's about 320 lbs.
This weight capacity depends a lot on the tractor too, and the narrow frames are ideally suited given how heavily built they are. (My cast iron grill surround alone weighs over 40 lbs! The Bethlehem Steel company must have loved IH lol) Oh and then there's the K301 etc. Of course this can also be addressed by adding front counter weights, but from what I've experienced the 300 Lb capacity is a comfortable point to max out at. The tractor also needs a strong enough rear axle, and the Cub shines in this respect too. Here are some pics, to give you an idea of capacity. The larger amount is mulch, the smaller load is soil. Each is under 10 cubic feet.

I knew I wanted to have the box be able to dump, so one of the first things I had to do, was come up with a mounting system.
I use a tiller mount on the rear for my sleeve hitch adapter and I happened to notice the mower lift frame was about the right size and shape, and was very sturdy. I had to tweak the mounts ears inward a little to make them fit the tiller mount, but that was about it. Easy peasy!
That handled the compression side of the mount so some old angle iron made up the tension side of things. I was going to bolt the tractor side to the trumpet housing bolts of the rear axle, but thought that might be too stressful, so I drilled two 3/8" holes into the side frame beneath the implement lift.
Mounting is fairly easy then, with two pins on the bottom securing to the tiller mount, and a total of 4 3/8" bolts securing the angle iron in place.
This created a simple, strong triangle for the box to mount on. Enjoy, and more pictures etc to come!

Thanks guys!
Yeah I wanted something that looked like it was original equipment. The decals really helped with that.
I roller painted it with Tremclad Recreation white, as it's pretty close to original and durable.
Once I had the frame made, I turned my attention to the dump box.
The dump box is made of very thin sheet metal; fine for light, soft loads like leaves or mulch, but I wanted more durability.
Plus, i didn't want shovels etc causing outward dents, like some of the old pick up trucks were know for, before double skinned boxes became the norm.
For this reason, I lined the sides with some thin ply (1/8" maybe) and the floor 1/2" ply, the thicker ply also increasing the floor load ability.

The load and pivot points were made of old bed rail and the forward support, a piece of 4x4 I had laying around. The 4x4 was just the right size and I was able to notch it out to take up and side loads, helping out the pivot points. Incidentally, I added hockey pucks for spacers later on at the pivot points so that when the box was horizontal, the weight is taken up by the pucks rather than all the weight on the pivots (not seen in the pictures).

So with the box ready to mount, that allowed me to set it in place and come up with the trip mechanism. As I mentioned earlier, the box is balanced so that it wants to rest in the horizontal position, so the latch is just some added security with very little load placed on it, assuming a balanced load in the box.

After that, I set about to painting it, mainly with a roller in Tremclad Recreation White. I find the colour to be close to the Cadet white of the time and it had good weather and scratch resistance. I added some decals here and there for some finishing touches, hopefully giving it a period look.
It has worked out very well so far, and I hope you enjoy the final photos in this series. Cheers!

Real nice job Mike, real nice. Nice machine too, I see your running a hydro pump with it. I like that trip handle mechanism a lot.
Have you given any thought to raising your rear work light?

Hey thanks Ken!
I'm slowly restoring it in between using it, and so far I've got the engine and area, including the hood and grill done, with new paint and decals.
I'll be posting pictures and details over the winter about some of the things I've done, including a PTO clutch rebuild.
Some other things I've done:
-low hour long block Kohler K301 engine from donor tractor 125.
-two sets of wheels, one with ags, one with turfs (ags are new, new turfs will be mounted on blasted and painted rims in the spring.)
-new axle pivot pin
-new ball joints
-starter generator rebuild
-new clutch basket/starter pulley
-new hydro filter, oil, pump gasket leak fixed, rear diff cover leak fixed
-rear wheel weights
-rear work light
-new carburettor
-rear implement lift
-new belts
-QA-36 gearbox rebuild with parts from Jeff.
-hydro suction elbow leak repair.
I plan on working my way through other parts of the body (e.g fenders, steering tower, etc.) as time allows.
So far I have a blower for it, a box scraper, the dump box, and a Brinly spike aerator.
I'd like to find a, compost shredder, mower, and dozer blade yet. (I almost had all three as a package deal over the summer, but didn't have the cash at the time.) Would also like a plow so I can join in on Plow Days.
Yup, that Hein-Werner lift set up is nice. I injured my shoulder moving my motorcycle a few years ago, so the hydro lift was one of the things that sold me on this particular tractor. It makes lifting my QA-36 or my Brinly box scraper a breeze. The only thing I've done to that is change the oil and put new o rings in the cylinder. I did buy the various seals and stuff from CCSpecialties to reseal the pump itself at some point.
I like the Grote work light, but have thought of putting it higher up on some kind of support that would also accommodate a slow moving vehicle sign.
I might build some kind of light duty over head frame that I could carry tools with too, like a pseudo ROPS, or a Big Tool Rack: https://gemplers.com/products/bigtoolrack-yard-rack
I guess it depends on how ambitious I get. ;)
Cheers!
