New 1650
Look at what followed me home. It was a barn find and sat about 10 years. It does smoke and probably stuck oil ring. Thinking Seafoam, how much can be added to the oil?

Re: New 1650
High Paul, good looker there, nice find!
I believe Seafoam has alcohol in it, I'd avoid that. Alcohol isn't a good lubricant. I'd use Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO), follow their directions on the bottle for adding to the oil. It might take some good hot summer running before it finally loosens up, but I think the MMO is the safer way to go. I don't usually add MMO to the oil, but I do put MMO in every can of gas for all the outdoor equipment. Provides some good valve lube for these air cooled engines. So, I'd be putting the MMO in the fuel too (long term), but only in the oil until the ring freed up. If you go this route, let us know how it does!

Re: New 1650
Paul looking good!
I’ve used both MMO and sea foam, sea foam fixed a water in gas issue years ago on a daily driver. Of corse, the catalytic converter went too.... lucky for me GM had a recall and even with 107xxx on the clock they paid for the new one.
For your issue I would try the MMO, I would use both in the gas and oil. I was good about using it in all gas, but now that I’ve gone all ethanol free I’m not as good about “spiking” the gas.

Re: New 1650
Oh that's a nice one. Please, please don't re paint it, that will buff out real nice. Give it all the love it needs, it's obvious that the earlier owner did.
I made the switch over to non ethanol for all my small engines around seven years ago and never looked back. Faster startups, smoother running, and no fuel issues ever- gas stabilizer is no longer needed either. My old GMC sits around a lot these days, it goes out for recycle duty and little else anymore. Non ethanol is all I run it that too and there's never a start up issue with that either.
Call it excessive but when I fill up the cans up that first gallon goes into the transport vehicle just so what I have in them is 100% pure non corn.

Re: New 1650
That's an instance where adding alcohol is a necessary evil. Alcohol makes gas go bad because it attracts water. But once you have water in the fuel, adding more alcohol is what will get it out. But there's no way I'd want alcohol in the oil.
I've been e-free for years, but I still can't stop myself from adding the MMO to the fuel, I figure a little top-end lube can't hurt and I've heard good things about MMO reducing the carbon build up in the heads.

Re: New 1650
A good inspection of my new 1650 it's in very good condition. Other than the oil ring issue the only other issue is a wiring problem for starting which I already found the problem. Where is the neutral start switch located on the 1650?
Google research suggests pouring a bit of Marvel down into the cylinder and let sit. It's supposed to be good to free up rings.

Re: New 1650
As for the smoking issue, I'd probably pull the head off and have a look inside.
That way, if you don't see any other issues (e.g. a scored cylinder wall), you can add the lube of choice to the cylinder and it will make cleaning it out when finished a breeze.
If you go this route, you can de-carbon things, examine your valves, and should replace the head gasket too.
Hope it helps, and good luck!

One ounce to one gallon providing I remember
That may be a bit excessive.

Re: New 1650
My 1650 sat a few winter months with MMO added to the cylinder. Got it running yesterday and I'd say I have about 20% of the smoke when running compared to when I got it. So it appears the MMO is working. Added more and will let sit for a few days and run again.

Re: New 1650
New 1650 has been put to work. Virtually no smoke, looks like a few months of MMO did the job, or maybe it's out of oil!

Or Harley! I've got 3 Brits, 4 Italian, 2 HD, and 4 kawasaki steel horses in my stable. Only one brit, and 2 HD's have leaks that seem uncurable!
That 1650 is beautiful
