Dual Hydraulics opinions

Post by savemenow »

Hey folks, Merry Holiday!! First post since the old site crashed.

Does anyone have the dual hydraulics that was optional on 1450 and 1650? Even though I have a 149, I am considering upgrading to this setup. Mechanical and modification issues aside, I'm looking for how the side to side blade angling works for snow removal. I do enough manual angle changing that it would be nice to have the hydro do the work. I'm concerned about the "power" of the angling ram, as I've read they are weak. Just lookin for opinions. I think I could do the mods to add all this, but wondering if the performance is worth all the effort. Thanks in advance.

Marty,

Welcome to the forum!

From my experience, the power angle setup has plenty of muscle to pivot the blade even when it's got a good heavy pile in front of it. I think you would bend or break something before you ran out of angling power. If you have the ability, I think it's a great option to have, and saves a lot of effort getting off and on your tractor. Do you have a angling kit and the dual hyd option available to you? The worst part of it to me is the cost and availability of all the parts.

I'm definitely glad I was able to use hyd angling. It's a bear having to get off the tractor every time you want to change angles.

I've added a dual spool valve to my 1650 and front and rear ports. The hydraulic angling works great as a time saver, and I have also been able to get out of slightly stuck situations by pushing the tractor back using the angling cylinder. As far as strength goes, my cylinder is the earlier setup with the 5/8" rod and I am using it on a 54" blade and have yet to have a problem with breakage.

Thats going to be my next project , installing power angle on my 54" snowblade . Yeah , its a hassle getting on and off and manually changing the angle .
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

I have one tip for everyone using a power angle setup. Periodically check the bolts that hold the front bracket to the blade. I have had these come loose or out completely several times. I finally used locknuts along with the lockwashers on them.

Just a heads up to check the cylinder rod end pin hole and mount, the drawings show the front mount for the later, larger rod cylinder and the cylinder drawn is the earlier, smaller rod cylinder. The .531" hole in the cylinder rod needs a 1/2" pin, not 5/8". This was also mentioned on the old site. Would hate to have someone make all the parts and not have them go together.

Marty,
I'm looking at doing the same thing to my 149 as I just picked up a power angle blade.
I still need to figure out how I'm doing the hydraulics and what parts i still need. I do have a parts 149 with all of the hydraulics and might look at using them in mine.

I also got tired of climbing on and off of my 149 to change the blade angle.
Here is a picture of Western PA “Lazy Mans” solution. Not a good picture but the only one I currently have.

A couple pieces of conduit, an eye bolt and a cable and you are in business. Rotate, push or pull, release and you're done.

Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas,

That manual version is a twin to the system used on most blades I have seen.

Once you have hydro angle, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it. Very well worth the effort to install dual hydraulics if you do much blade work.

Glad to hear all that good stuff, It'll probably be my summer project, unless my "honey-do" list gets too long. I've got all the parts in a box in my shed from this past fall. Thanks for all the replies. Happy New Year to all!!
