IH Cub Cadet 800 going west ( Iowa )

Post by Jlaws »

I was recently asked by a fellow member Ray Weaver if I'd be interested in selling one of my four 800's .
People who know me know that I don't sell many of my cubs , especially some of the rarer ones .
At first I said no , but Ray informed me that he had a gentleman IH collector that had been looking for one for a while , and that it was going to a good home .
He also said it was getting a full restoration and that it was going into full retirement in an IH Farmall museum .
After we settled on a price , Ray made all the transportation arrangements .
I just got back from delivering it to IH central (Paul Bells ) where its going to spend a couple of days in Louisville before its second leg going to a show in Missouri . There it will be transfered for it final leg to Iowa.
Here's some pictures of it going from the back corner of my cub den , it after I washing 5 years of dust off , and it being transfered from the back of my truck to Pauls truck today.
Paul's taking a big trailer load to the show , so its going in the back of his truck .

I never figured one of my cubs would ever end up in a museum .
Heres a link to where its going .

If the Good Lord's willing and the creek don't rise,It will be in Fredricktown Wednesday afternoon, but I don't know what day it is leaving Fredricktown, so it depends on what day you are there as to whether or not you see it.
May you always have as many landings as you do takeoff's.........

Vince , if you look close at the pictures i took of the 800 in the yard , I don't have any grass . Its all turned brown and I haven't mowed the yard in over a month.
And I can testify that Pauls yard doesn't look any better...

I tried to mow what grass that was still green last Friday and had to quit cause I didn't have a dust mask and goggles on. Mower engine was so covered in dust/dead grass clippings , and hot enough, I was afraid it would catch on fire. Didn't want to cut grass anyway.........

Folks for your information there is a great article about Farmall Land in the August 2009 issue of farm Collector magazine
DSCN0078.JPG
The article states that they have thirty Cub Cadets (I suppose we could call that 31 now).
Written by Mr. Bill Vossler, it makes for a great read!

The Mez's have a very nice setup at FarmallLand USA. Sounds like she went to a good home. Shouldn't take em too long to find one of each, especially with Ray helping out. He finds the good and rare ones :D  .

Later all.

Mr . Mez should be very happy with my old 800 as it is 99.5 % correct.
Other than faded paint and decals its sheet metal is straight with very little rust and no previous owner added holes .
Dash tin is in very good condition , and steering wheel foil decal are there .
The only issues I seen with it other than paint and decals was that the lower grill screen was torn in the usual spot where the muffler exhaust pipe exits and the original seat pan needed a new cushion . I had the engine running at one time , but the original small starter which is still on it needs rebuilt ( brushes are bad ) .
Overall its a very good starting point for a restoration . I'd like to see some pictures of it when it finally gets restored .
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

I have 3 of the 800's and really like reading about others. Not many out there so It's always good to see and hear of them. I still use the one with the rear PTO for shows when I can.

Mike its funny that its the rarest cub cadet made , and I've owned 4 and had a chance to pickup a fifth one .
The guy only wanted $250 for it to ,and yeah I could kick myself now for not buying it .
At the time I was tryin to thin the herd and really didn't have the space , but for that price I could have turn right around and made a few bucks .
I know we have members that have never seen one or have been looking to own one .

It took me a couple years to find my 800. They are hard to find unless you live in Kentucky  ! Jess, you must live in 800 central ;) . Mine's got a creeper and rear lift. Sure would be nice to find a rear PTO. Maybe someday. The Mez's will give your old 800 a nice retirement. I must say if I ran across another 800, I might bite. Actually know where one is about ten miles away........

What makes the 800 so special?

I know about the starter thing and frames cut.

What make s them differant than lets say the 86, or a 72?

Looks like a junky QL to me, but what do I know?

Only 2,345 800s were made, making them the most rare IH Cub Cadet.

Vince,
It is the only QL worth having, and there were only 2345 of them built (lowest production of any of the IH built Cub Cadets). I have had either 3 or 4 of them and all of them came from KY. One of them ended up in the collection of this short, round man in PA....

Hey Paul , did anyone offer to buy it out of the back of your truck.
I figure since it was at a show there might have been some offers from someone looking for a future project. :)
I think the reason that so many 800's are found in Kentucky is thats all us po folk can afford .
We couldn't afford those high priced hydro's...1250 1450 1650

Now Vince , you put a 14 hp engine in it , you'd have the ultra rare 1400 gear drive , which they actually didn't make . :D
The one 800 I have that has a few hard to find engine items missing (small starter and the cast muffler duct piece ) , I've thought of temporarily putting a 16 I have on the shelf in it ... :o
With the side panel nobody be the wiser , until I started it up .
It be kind of like putting a big block in a Vega .
I see a lot of cub cadets while going down the tracks , its a shame I can't pull over and ask about them .

I would like to know more about rarity.
The 800 was the least made model, what were the next three?

Scott,
According to information that has been posted/published by Hank Will and or Ken Updike, thefollowing models have the lowest production totals. The next 7 in order range from 16318 (123) to 39102 (100).

Model 800= 2345 built
Model 169= 3977 or 4005, both numbers have been stated, but 4005 is the one normally used.
Model 126= 5247
Model 73= 7678
Model 86= 8489
Model 72= 9881
Model 107= 10846
Model 71= 11072

OK, you asked for 4 and you got 8, consider the extra 4 a bonus
May you always have as many landings as you do takeoff's.........

Nice post on the 800...I enjoyed reading the story about how it's getting to it's new home.
