Painted Hardware
Got a question, I clean and paint all the nuts & bolts. But when I assemble the parts I damage the paint. What is the trick to keeping the wrench from chipping the paint on the bolt heads?

Re: Painted Hardware
A couple of piece of a latex or nitrile glove between the socket and fastener work pretty good.

I replace the fasteners with stainless.

Save some of your paint before you add hardener in a pill bottle and a small brush and touch them up. The Correct Police will give you a ticket for SS fasteners

Re: Painted Hardware
I would not use them if I were you...most hardware-store SS fasteners are about as soft as Grade 2 steel bolts, and thus are nowhere near as strong as the Grade 5 bolts that are used just about everywhere on a CC.Dbaumanjr wrote:I replace the fasteners with stainless.

Re: Painted Hardware
They may be soft, but I haven't had any problems with twisted off or sheared bolts. So obviously I haven't been using it or any of my other vehicles hard enough, yet.

Re: Painted Hardware
You can buy inserts for wrenches from places like Eastwood for this purpose. Usually strong plastic and used on a wrench 1-2 sizes larger.

Re: Painted Hardware
I would zinc plate them so it would be original, Matt has a nice write up on his site about it.

Re: Painted Hardware
If you are really trying to please the correct police, and/or want to do it the way the factory did, then any bolts that should be painted should already be assembled before painting. Any bolts for items that were assembled after painting should be plated.
Going back to the original question; using good quality 6 point sockets helps too. Better sockets have notches in the corners so that the socket pushes against the flats instead of the corners. No matter what though you will probably still end up touching the bolt heads up with a small brush.
